'Cause everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed on the patio.

I was out and about here at work this morning and I kept running into this rather "assertively cheery" guy who was talking to people here there and yonder. My first thought was that he, um, maybe hadn't taken his medicine or something and was bothering people.

I got a little closer and was able to see his shirt and realized he was employed here as the "Smoke Patrol". Apparently, his job is to keep people from smoking in unauthorized places. Now, please know I mean no offense to any of you valued readers who smoke, but I thought this was the greatest idea. This is, afterall, a hospital and the smoking areas are clearly marked, yet people continue to ignore them and there are patients who can't use these common areas because of the smoke.

The best part about it, however, was the looks on people's faces when this guy approached them. He was just so happy and upbeat that there was no way anyone was going to tell him "no".

I just hope he doesn't get beaten to a pulp or something. But, at least he'd already be at the hospital.

Haha! What a great idea! Ciggy Police!

that is too funny, he is needed but funny. Hope he doesn't get hurt!

It really would take a special guy to happily remind people of their offenses.

This reminded me of a scene at our local mall the other day. There's big signs near the door "No smoking in this area" and "smoking in designated areas only" there was at least 10 people standing around smoking, leaning against the signs, etc. while the designated smoking area 10 feet away was desserted. Would have made a funny picture anyway.

Daily - I saw dozens of smokers smoking right in front of the HUGE posters of little kids with oxygen masks that say "please dont smoke out here, this air is used in our unit". Wackos. They need a smoke patrol.

Maybe they could give him a squirt gun too for the more insistent smokers.

I think he should be allowed to carry a fire extinguisher. Get him a shirt that says "If you are smoking, I will assume you are on fire and will respond accordingly."

Yea for the smoke police!

Oh that is a great idea. I love that they have him!

I love to see all the smokers standing outside the ER entrance, especially the ones holding their IV poles. Stupid.

I would love to have that job! I go around telling people to keep their voices down when they're having conversations because it's hard for us cubicle people to concentrate when others are talking loudly to each other about personal issues or squawking into a cellphone.

It still surprises me how many people smoke...

That is a cool idea. But, I certainly would not want to be the person to tell a smoker they can't smoke. That can get ugly!

At the hospital where I used to work a patient started at fire in her bed by trying to smoke while on oxygen. Several employees were injured in this situation. The patient was relatively unscathed thanks to the efforts of staff but her family sued the hospital.

If he does take a beating...he'll close to emergency!I wouldn't want his job though.People can get testy about their ciggys.lol

Can I borrow this guy and have him hang around here? He can tell me to stop eating when I'm not hungry and say, "Do you really need that cookie?"

If he said it with a smile I probably wouldn't slap him.

That is a good idea. But I would hate to have his job. I am a smoker but am always considerate of the signs etc. I hate it when people smoke in nondesignated areas.

Awesome - I'd LOVE to see people employed as that more often. I used to be a smoker, and I'm embarrased in restrospect and how awful and obnoxious that habit was to the people who had to suffer around me!
My office-building recently posted giant signs indicating where and where NOT to smoke. Now I can come and go without walking/waiting in a cloud of carcinogens!

PS - I always thought it was ludicrous for health professionals to smoke... I mean, come on!

Where did they ever find someone willing to take on that job? Could be quite dangerous!

I don't smoke and dont enjoy having smoke blown in my face. It annoys me! Just got back from Europe when my eyes were perpetually red from all the smoke and I had to keep leaving because of the asthma attacks from it!
Can he be my personal smoke guard?? I would love that
