Electricity, Eeee-lec-tricityWhen the power goes out, how many nonsensical things do you do before you realize that it's not going to work? Tonight Busy Dad had to change a breaker doodad and he had to turn the power off. While waiting for this task to be finished, in the course of about 3 minutes, I:
- tried to use the icemaker in the fridge, was puzzled why it didn't work, decided to just get water from the dispenser instead (no, it didn't work either)
- did a little dance because I had a laptop that could run on battery and I wouldn't lose blog reading time, thank goodness for my new wireless router, but wait, why couldn't I sign on? Why, that there router needs 'lectricity to work, too. Who knew?
- briefly thought about using my new hurlmill, but quickly saw the flaw in that logic
- attempted to turn on several lights
- tried to make a phone call on the (electrically powered, ya know) cordless phone
Sometimes it's hard to believe I'm supposed to be raising three kids.

I prefer to think of it as a "dreadmill".
We all do that! I think it's a flaw in the human brain... we cannot process the loss of power and it's effect on our modern life. LOL
You surely have one of the most interesting sites in net. I believe in your way of doing, so go on this way. It’ surely the right way.
3 minutes can be an eternity, can't it? I would have run to the freezer and started eating all the ice cream...just in case!
Once whent he power was out here I said oh well, I don't mind no power, I'll just watch a movie.....see a problem with that??? LOL!
Once upon a time, we were without power for a couple of days after a bad storm.
I probably tried to turn on the same light switch 20 times, just out of force of habit. It drives you crazy.
My friend who has two kids, a 10 month old and a 6 year old, tells me that she does things like that because she has to think for 3. 4 if you count her husband.
And did Busy Baby ask you to turn the wights on? lol... My kids freak out when the power goes out!
I did that one day when the water was turned off so the plumber could repair something outside.
How many times did I try and get a drink of water!!!
(cruel joke at my house: lock the doggie door and see how many times they smush their noses)
Busy Mom... remember to breathe!
You should see me during hurricanes when the power goes off for 3 or 4 days...it's awful! It's so hard to accept that nothing works. And when it goes back on, my middle daughter spends three days telling me that such and such won't work because of the power being off...she forgets that it's back on!
How on earth did the pioneers live without electricity?
As a former electrician, I hate to tell you that even I get caught by the same kind of things. LOL funny how cordless phone doesn't work. Keep regular phone in closet in case of power outage. Remember cell phones still work too. IN case of emergencies.
Why is it when power goes out, my first thought is
"damn, there goes the computer!".
Second thought is always,
"should I get the food out of the refrig before it goes bad?"
In that order.
Computer first,
Food second.
LOL
I have done some of those things when the power is off! Humans are funny!
Blue
It's called co-dependecy. I hear there are treatment programs. ;)

In our case the batteries in the flashlight were dead and my wife stated aloud, "Oh yeah, the power's out".
We were without power for two days last summer. I turned on the pantry light every single time I went in there. The day after the power came back, the lightbulb in the pantry blew. Coincidence?
For those that can't live without power for a short time (for computers or other electronics), get a UPS!!! Not an UPS man or van, but a temporary power backup supply. With my notebook, my network/internet stuff lasted longer than my notebook battery (got to test it in a freak wind storm last year).
Oh - Guess what? You can even attach a cordless phone to it too! Though not sure you would want such a bulky device hanging next to the phone in a public room.
And now y'all have me thinking about getting one for my TVs & DVD players - thanks! =P
HAHAHAHAHA... I *always* try to go online with my battery-powered laptop when the lights go out. Doh!
Unfortunately, power outages are pretty common around here, unlike in NYC where a blackout is a news event.
