Spring Brrrreak

Nothing says, "Happy Easter" like being huddled around your illicit space heater under your desk and wondering where in the wide, wide world of sports is everyone? And, while I'm at it, nothing says "peaceful vacation" like your 8 year old calling to let you know, "Daddy borrowed a trombone for me to play for all of Spring Break!"

I don't know why I'm so cold, it's not terrible outside, it's about 50, but I was too cold to go out in search of lunch, so I bought a sandwich from upstairs coffee stand dude. He even grilled it for me and it was mighty tasty. It should have been exquisitely tasty, as I am now going to have to take my kids out of school because I had to use a tuition payment to buy it. I guess I could make one at home if I actually bought the aforementioned (OK, I mentioned it "afore" in some other entry, I'm too cold to go find it. Look it up if you're wondering) George Foreman grill.

The dirty laundry generators Busy Kids and Busy Dad are officially on Spring Break. I remember when Spring Break meant something. It still does to some adults, but, since I'm the only non-teacher in my friend and family-o-sphere, it only means a better parking place for me at work. We really ought to plan something for this time of year since, Busy Girl especially, is old enough to know that many of her friends go on trips to the beach or otherwise out of town. When I was growing up, we never went anywhere for Spring Break (I made up for that in college, btw) and I vividly remember wanting to go somewhere, anywhere, so badly I could almost taste it. I just thought we had another year or so before she noticed, but I'm wrong. We may actually try to go somewhere at the end of next week. We'll go out of town for the day on Saturday, but going to your grandmother's (unless she lives on the beach) doesn't count.

And now for something completely unrelated, does anyone have one of those portable DVD players? We just got one and used it for a day or so, and then the DVDs wouldn't load, it would just grind and nothing would happen. We took it back and the guy tols us that the portables can't play "big" DVDs with a lot of info on them. Is that right?! If so, how do you decide what DVDs it can handle?

As far as I know, all DVD's are "big." Some have more data than others, but the disc size is the same and the format should work in anything that calls itself a "DVD Player."

Sounds like they just had a bad one.

BTW, we had a CD player years ago and the center spindle thing (that holds the CD in place) lost one of its three prongs, so if you bumped it the cd would come loose and grind. Since we bought it for use in the car, this pretty much trashed it for us. That thing cost $300 and didn't even have a video screen :)

Good luck...

Hey, why do you need a portable dvd player when you have a laptop? Screen's bigger, too...just get an adapter to plug into the car cigarette lighter...

Ugh, I know! The coffee stand sandwiches are SOO expensive. So far that has kept me away from them, by I hear they are really good!

I've had my portable DVD player for almost a year. It is fabulous, and I've never had a problem with it. We take it everywhere...Paris, London, Switzerland...and it's going to Greece with us in July!

Maybe the guy was clueless.

What's a "big" Dvd?

I miss spring break every year so much when the flowers bloom and it starts to get nice out. Won't even get a 3 day weekend until May!

I once wrote that you can consider yourself a successful parent if your kids don't end up on an 'anything gone wild' spring break video.

Good luck with that. As the father of a girl- well, lets just say I'll be scouring those late night commercials.

I've been thinking about picking up one of those portable DVD players. Shoot! That's a bummer that one doesn't work.

Thanks for the heads up!

Have a nice Easter weekend! Happy egg hunting.

I have never done anything on Spring Break either but I am looking forward to the Easter Bunny coming!

The DVD thing sounds like crap to me. Most people with portable DVD players can play whatever they want on them.

They're mostly for porn.

I would demand some customer service... I have one of the older generation portables, so in theory it should be more finicky, but we've never had a problem-- even when the kids would play tug-o-war with it in the backseat.

Sounds to me like the salesman was bending the truth a bit there.

Not that a salesman would EVER do something like that...no, sirree, never happens!

as for spring break, birding girl is the ONLY ONE breaking this week. She has also informed us that we are the ONLY FAMILY IN TOWN not going on vacation this week!
Yippee! I have the shop-rite to myself!

What a load of HOOIE! Return it completely and then get a different brand. We LOVE ours. It's a Cyberhome and it comes with the case that you can hand between the seats of the car! IT TOTALLY ROCKS! We've had it for 2 1/2 years and it's still going strong!

When I complained to sales clerk dude about the DVD player I picked up he told me that the laser eye was a lot weaker on the portables and I had to clean, even brand new, DVD's before loading them in. So now in my case along with the DVD player is a small packet of wipes to use on it.

So far that has taken care of my problem. I sometimes still have to try and load it. Also the factory settings were set where it wouldn't any of my PG movies but it would the R's. Go figure huh.

My 5yo only noticed that everyone else went out of town last week when I [DOH!] agreed she could have a party. Thank goodness I agreed to invite several kids....most were not home.

At our house a "big" DVD is also known as a 33rpm RECORD....as in "Daddy how are you going to get that big thing into the DVD player?"
