From time to time, here at busymom.net, we like to provide you with bits of practical advice. Today's advice come from the good folks at Cingular. For a couple of days, I have been having trouble sending pictures from the camera phone to my Moblog (yes, a mission critical task). So, I called customer service:
Me: "WAH! I can't send pictures!" "I seem to be unable to use the send picture function on my cellular phone."
Customer Service Rep: "When was the last time you power-cycled it down for at least 20 minutes?"
Me: *crickets chirping*
Customer Service Rep: "You should power cycle your phone down for at least 20 minutes a day."
Me: "OK, and this whole time I've merely been turning it off."
Customer Service Rep: "Yes, you should turn it off for at least 20 minutes a day."
Me: "But I don't put very much power into it when I turn it off and I'm not much of a cyclist, is that the problem?"
Customer Service Rep: "Uh, OK. I'm sending you out an update now. Power cycle your phone up in in about 20 minutes and things should be OK."
Me: "Thanks!"
So, there you have it. You should power cycle your phone down for at least 20 minutes a day. You may now resume your regularly scheduled programming.

Um, so is power cycling your phone the same thing as turning it off?
I think power cycle is one of those stationary dealies in the fitness center. Maybe you hook your phone into it.....
Do they TELL you this stuff when you buy the phone? I don't remember being told to power down for 20 minutes.
I don't even have a camera phone yet, so you're much more technilogically-advanced than I am, even if you don't know what "power down" means!
I wonder if that is what is wrong with my laptop battery!
power cycle down? you must have pushed them past their word tracks @ Cingular. at least you have accomplished something today!
I'm gonna add "cycle" to everything now. Yep, I'm going to "sleep cycle" tonight and have "snack cycle" in a few minutes and maybe later I'll "surf the net cycle". Those cellphone people have taught me a new way to talk, yo. :D
What if your phone can't reach the pedals?
Does your phone have to wear a helmet while power cycling?
Do power cycles come with training wheels?
Just wondering, you know.

I have a camera phone... Dh has a camera phone. We've had them for about a year now and we've never ever turned them off except twice on plane rides.
So... of course that has me wondering if it's a 'brand' thing or if it's just cingulars way of telling you to do something so you'll hang up and leave them alone. Bah ha ha ha.
Learned the power-down thing about the cell phone too, the hard way. Took it on vacation and it did not have the latest update (due to not powering down). Was unable to make roaming calls when we had a medical emergency on the road with our son - frustrating!
Huh. One rep from "them" told me 3 minutes a day and the other told me not to worry about it, it does it automatically.
They're all on crack.
I am ashamed to admit I have one of those fancy camera phones, and I have no idea how to do anything other than make phone calls...
Mine powers down on a regular basis...due to the fact that I always forget to charge it!
soooo yeah, What IS power cycling?
Okay, I don't EVEN know what you are talking about!!! What is power down? Is that turning it off? Why don't they just say to TURN IT OFF?
Camera phones? We have those now?
Perhaps you can get training wheels for this "power cycle" - just until you get the hang of it!
I'm boxing up my Cingular phoine now...'sending it 'power cycling' to the Pyrenees. Hey, if you're gonna power cycle, ya might as well go all the way. There's room in the box if anyone wants in on this.
What the heck does power down mean? wtf? I'm lost :)
Who knew?
So, did they tell you what happens if you DON'T "power down" for 20 a day? (Or maybe T-Mobile doesn't have that problem?)
What? I have to turn off my phone to make it work? How far behind am I?
I had the same problem ( I have Cingular too)..They just told me to turn it off and turn it back on again..??? At least i can call you for free........
