Summer has officially come to an abrupt end, today is the first day of school. The kids are excited, and it will be good to get back in some sort of routine. Busy Boy is a 4th grader now, a big deal since they are the oldest kids on the hall. Busy Girl is officially a 6th grader and enjoying every minute of her oxford shirt and skirt status (a step up from jumpers and blouses). She had her hair done and was dressed and ready to go at 6:30 this morning. We'll see how long that lasts. The Preschooler Formerly Known as Busy Baby is officially a preschooler, now. As hard as it is to believe, he is one of the "big kids" in the building, I think he starts algebra or something this year.
(We interrupt this "new beginnings" crap to tell you that the FedEx guy just called and he's on the way with the insurance check so I might be able to go pick up Vanna White today. Actually, they said we could take her and just pay them when the money came, but there's no telling what might have happened if we had done that. Back to your regular programming.)
I took the requisite first day of school pictures. The camera is downstairs, I am upstairs and have no desire to go downstairs, so you'll have to use you imagination about what they look like, for now. As I have every other year, I parked the car and waited with the kids and other parents to go inside and see their classrooms. Busy Girl got all panicky when I threatened to dance and sing whilst taking pictures of her in her new desk. This was pretty effective since, apparently, parents shouldn't do that in 6th grade. I didn't get to see much of either of their classrooms since the teachers got right down to business and everyone was in their desks sitting and listening.
So, I headed on to the "Back to School Coffee" in the cafeteria. It's such a misnomer, since the stuff they serve doesn't really appear to be coffee, but whatever. I don't usually like to go, but since I'm the Chairman of the School Committee (not the Home and School Association, which is like the PTA), I thought I'd better at least show my face to the principal. Good golly, the "Capri Pants and Kitten Heeled Sandals per Capita" ratio was over the top! I know I dwell in the Land of Minivans and Capris, but, man alive! Don't get me wrong, I'm not so edgy, hip and happenin' that I look down my nose at it, after all, I do have 2 minivans and several paris of capris, but that was just awfully early to be immersed in such thick stereotype. It's fun to laugh at the women who show up in full exercise regalia who act like they are just breezing through on the way to work out and it's always interesting to see who's having another baby. Apparently, four kids is "the new three" this year. Who knew?
I took the day off since they get out at 11:30. I truly thought I'd get something done around the house before I had to go get them. Yeah.

As a teacher, I dread the first day of school only because it means I can't wake up late anymore. *Sigh*
Today is our first day a school too. Our kids were excited and ready to go. I am sure my wife was ready for them to go too so she can get some work done at home.
Be sure to let all of us know how the "pimped out" van looks.
"four kids is "the new three" this year. Who knew?"
ROFLMAO!
You ARE getting something done! You're talking to us!
The capris! The capris! Make them stop!
I'm trying to defy the capri trend by taking back the mini skirt from Britney Spears. Can't do much about my also white minivan, though. I'm just hoping that driving it with the miniskirt and cowboy boots on diverts attention.

Oh how I envy thee...You have kitten heel mania there too, huh? And I do so enjoy seeing the moms in their workout clothes when you know they'll be standing in line next to you in 15 minutes to get that iced mocha.
We're still 19 days from the 1st day of school, and 13 days from "drop your stuff off day" where I will get to witness my own version of the kitten heel/capri pant crowd driving suv's larger than my 1st house, can't wait for that.
Aaw, we don't have a Coffee social on the first day. I had to walk all over the school and back to get the full view of the capri and kitten heel brigade. Ridiculous.
I will admit to wearing workout gear when dropping my kids off, simply because if I don't get to the gym then, I won't get there at all.
Oh good lord, "four is the new three"? Say it ain't so! And I thought I was so trendy.
Although, my capris look rather spiffy, if I do say so myself. Now, where did I leave those kitten heels?
If 4 is the new 3 then it's the only time in my life I've been ahead of the trend. LOL
Note to self: do not wear capris on the kids' first day of school.
If 4 is the new 3 then I am damned to being a has-been. Ain't nobody gonna make me have another baby! I am just now able to fit back into my capris. ;)
So how did the first day go for the busy kids? I know what your saying about the capris and kitten heeled sandles. Been there, seen all that, now it's the college moms!! But - Chairman of the School Comittee - exactly what have you gotte yourself into?
So will you be joining the new trend? I mean, shouldn;t there ALWAYS be a busy baby? :)
I have given up on following the trends. Until I become skinny I am not buying into it.
I'm going to find the place that manufactures all those capris and burn it to the ground.
Just the thought of that many pair of capris in the same place scares me.

True that 4 is the new 3, but don't forget that 3 is the new 2 and so if you have three, then you are still quite trendy...
What the hell am I saying?
:O)
I know several people that swore they were done at 3, and now they're considering 4.
Different school system - last Thursday was a half-day, Monday was the first full day. I have to say - I think I only saw one pair of capris last Thursday, but there were a large number of "you did look in the mirror before leaving the house, right?" ensembles.
Wow, either things have really changed since I was a kid or I had a terrible mom. I don't recall ever having been escorted to my new classroom on the first day of school. I was lucky if she dropped me off at the curb (instead of taking the bus, of course).
We are into day 5 of the Bugs school cranking up for the new educating season.
And as for capri's, well, I am sort of like Anne and thinking seriously about cowboy boots and Daisy Dukes while driving my black Freestyle.
Tomorrow is the first day here. All the neighbours are hating life right now.
I'm sure they empathise with you BM.
Cheers.
I don't have very many Capris because they don't fit me right. We don't start school until Sept. 7th. (obscenely late, but right now I'm OK with it)
HAH. That sounds like me. I love wearing capris, they are so comfortable. And we are ready to buy a van. My boy will start kindergarten on 9/7 too. It's later than most of the places in this country. I wonder if it's a california thing.
I tried... I tried... and had to sink into controversy (ick!):
Carnival of the Infantile
Mine started yesterday, too. And I have to admit I was wearing capris. I wasn't anywhere near the school, though, and they're old, faded, baggy denim capris which I wore with my ancient Clark sandals with NO heel, so I hope you'll still be my friend. ;-)
Capris are a wonderful invention for women with very ugly knees, like mine. This reminds me, now is a good time to look for capris on sale! ;-)
If 4's the new 3, I guess I'm tragically unhip with 1. C'est la vie.
Back to school isn't til after Labor Day in upstate NY...
And that reminds me... my favorite pair of capris went missing...
;-)
oh right, I am sooooo productive now that they are back in school. NOT!
OMG... first day already passed?! Thank goodness my boys first day is not until Sept 6. I'm so NOT ready for it! The coffee social for the parents is something my boys last school did, don't know if they'll have that in our new locale - we'll see! (it is kind of nice).
