Will blog for food. The theoretical day we fretted about when we were planning to have children has arrived. Busy Girl has to go to the orthodontist. Maybe there's a site on the Internet that can show me how to make our own braces out of a used Mac or an Altoids tin or something.

Good luck, Busy Girl!!
Well, she doesn't HAVE to go. You could always leave her snaggletoothed and bitter at you!
Pull em....they eat less that way.
If you find one let me know, my daughter needs them too!
If you find that site, let me know. We made that trip this morning and last week. Just what we needed a huge bill right before xmas. Boy that girl better appreciate this! When I'm an old lady, she better put me in the best old age home money can buy!
Good luck with that. I dread that day. I can't afford braces for three. At least my husband and I didn't need them. Keeping fingers crossed! Happy Holidays Busy Mom!
It is not as bad as it seems! On the pocket book it is, but not on the child.
Get out the check book or better yet, take out a loan!!
Make her wear a niqab, or burqa.
When she's got 10k of allowance money, she can get the braces.
My son is four, and the dentist is already telling us to start a fund for him. His x-rays were bad news. And at MY last dentist appt., I found out *I* have to get braces!!! WHAT GIVES?
yeah, I think it is McGuyver.com (sorry about the spelling if it is incorrect - my brain is on the fritz today).
If you figure out how, can you please send me the directions? Thank you! :)
That's what happens when you cave in to sex. Didn't they explain this to you in high school?
When she gets them off, tell her to wear her retainer. I wasn't very good about it, and my teeth definitely don't look as good as when I first got them off. On the bright side, my parents have stopped eating macaroni and cheese for dinner every night.
i thinks braces are getting better looking, hoping for the best!
BabyGirl just got hers off less than 2 months ago. If it helps at all, they DO put you on a payment plan and you pay monthly for the length of the braces, or even up to 3 years. Yeah, it's a long time but it's better than paying $5000 up front ya know?
PS: We have a 9 year old that is going to need them as well... and even though BabyGirl got them off the first week of November, we'll be paying for them until March of 2006. LOL.
Tell her it's a Southern Tween's right of passage. I remember the first day of 7th grade when probably 50% of the class arrived in those 'o so stylish' full band metal braces. Wax was my best friend! The end product was worth it though! And I too recommend the wearing of the retainer. I was not devoted and now have some out of line teeth.
Ack! I am sure you can figure out a way to make them!
We put our son through braces. My husband's second set overlapped the son's. The daughter is now in them, but only for one specific problem. She will need a full set later.
Oh, and I should have them, too.
Haha! We put braces on my son's teeth this summer...I told him we where going to check Ebay and the Flea Market for 2nd hand...I also told him that everytime he smiles I hear Blue Hawaii...I had no clue they cost as much as they do! LOL!
WOW ~ Thank goodness braces are covered in our insurance plan ( only $2200 here), I have 3 out of five kids needing them, with one needing palate surgery to make room in her mouth..... Funny, because when I first met my husband, I thought, WOW, what a BEAUTIFUL set of teeth!! ( I had braces for 6 1/2 yrs, I was definitely scouting for good teeth!) It wasn't till after we were thouroughly engaged and the wedding things bought that he told me he was in braces for 6 yrs with palate surgery himself for an extensive overbite. The stinker!! Our poor kids... Mark is right, woe unto the careless girl.lol..
Oh, yeah. Firstborn's on the Watch List because some of his teeth have decided to come in sideways. This'll be exciting.
The thing most people don't know is that it is negotiable! Have them give you the estimate then offer something less. Also go somewhere else to get another estimate then work one against the other. You can also pretax the $ through your company's benefit plan. Be very careful with the pretax because you have to split it between years.
Good luck!

You'll make it through BusyGirl's braces just fine...however, allow me to share a mantra to avoid a longer term financial crisis: "will pay cash for elopement" *smile*
My Mom put three us in braces. One right after another. As soon as my brother got out of his, my sister got them put on. As soon as she got her's removed, a week later, mine were put on.
I will pray that the menfolk in your family have good teeth so that you only have to do one round of orthondontics! My husband has perfect teeth and I spent years with braces. I hope our girls fall somewhere inbetween.
Good luck with that! My two oldest are in retainers now, and the twins started ortho in the summer. Even with insurance, I have/will shell out in excess of 15K!
Oh God I dread when that day comes.
Duct tape. You forgot duct tape. You can do anything with it!
Sorry she's gotta have braces. But, it's better to do it now than later. I guess...
We're drawing up a blueprint with flower arranging wire, bits of Erector set, and possibly the duct tape mentioned above. We'll let you know how it goes.
Like Kristen, my 5 year old's pediatric dentist tells me to start saving -- he showed us the x-rays and said he will definitely need braces. At least we have a while to save!
I can so relate to what you are saying BM. Ew, ok I don't like BM we'll just stick to Busy Mom...Anyhoo
I hope you carry some dental insurance. If by chance you don't though and you have a family meeting to decide to auction off The Preschooler Formly Known As Busy Baby then I'm in for a bid!!!!
I have five kids and so far, I've been told four of them are going to need braces at some time when they're older. Yikes! Baby hasn't been to the dentist yet. I'm afraid they'll say the same about her.
Braces are terrifically expensive, and a lot of work. Make sure that BG realizes that even when they're off, she will have to wear a retainer for the rest of her life. Our older girl has to wear hers, but only once a week at night. I wear mine every night because I'm anal.
Yeah, and besides having payments bigger than a mortgage, you also get to deal with the pain-riddled child who milks it for all it's worth. Needless to say, it's all painful for everyone involved!
I'm 36 years old and tomorrow is my one year anniversary of having my braces removed. My parents didn't have the money when I needed them as a teen (well neither did I, come to think of it)and I have a greater respect for my nice teeth now. I've known more people who had braces as kids who did not wear their retainers and now...well, you can't tell they even had braces.
The agony! I remember my mother having to borrow money from her father to get me something I didn't even want, but thank God she did, as I had a mouth like a shark--double rows of teeth. They just didn't FIT in my tiny mouth. Had to have 8 permanents pulled to make room. Ahhhh...good times, good times. (Don't tell Busy Girl)
Hope everything goes okay with her braces. I had needed them as a kid, but I screamed about it until my parents relented and didn't get them. Now I wish they had forced me, because braces at age 37 stink.
Or maybe you could get someone to like, sponsor the braces if you mention the orthodontist on your site... Like that Magic Castle guy I keep seeing on TV... It could happen. Think Umi.
if it's just a mild thing, i wouldn't even get the braces. i had mine on for 3ish years in middle/high school. and now i have permanent stains from the brackets (so more cost for me to get veneers except i can't afford that) and i have really bad cavities in all of my molars because of the bands. becuase no matter how much you brush it just doesn't get the rot that starts between the metal wrapping around your tooth and the tooth. oh--and i wore my retainer religiously except when eating or playing sax. didn't do a damn thing to keep my teeth in line. so now i have stained, rotted, crooked teeth. thanks braces!
