Second cup blues.

When I grow up, I'm going to invent coffee where the second cup tastes like it is at least in the same family as the first cup, instead of being strangers brought together only by circumstance. That is all.

I must disagree with you. Mainly because I have no patience whatsoever in the morning and always grab my first cup while it's still brewing and there is usually only an inch of dredge in the bottom. But I NEED the Caffine and CANNOT wait!

The second cup at least tastes like coffee. :)

Please put me on your "first customer" list.

I'll be second in line (right behind cas).

Two words: insulated carafe.

Seriously, if you use one of those crappy Mr. Coffee drip makers... if you leave the heating plate on, the heat and oxidation just ruin the coffee. I prefer to tune the burner off, and microwave the subsequent cups, if no carafe is available.
.

Never happen, unless you turn in your taste buds for a new set.

If you do, will you marry me? That's all I'm saying.

One word: Bailey's.

Your observation is so right on the money! There is nothing like the first cup - all others pale by comparison.

Ah, that's the beauty of Senseo. :-)

Of course, it's expensive, but if coffee is *important* to you...

You must be drinking the wrong kind of coffee or maybe my taste buds are just all burnt off! My Bean Central and Starbucks and Millstone brews all taste good to the last drop...unlike Maxwell House - ugh! And I have one of those crappy Mr. Coffee makers...works just fine for me!

I'd also like the coffee I make, to taste as good as the coffee someone else makes. Can you work on that too?

AMEN! How is it I can pour the SAME coffee into the SAME cup and get a DIFFERENT flavor? Whassupwidat?

Hmmmmm....cooofffeeeeee.....

Great idea. Too many families of coffee have been seperated by a few bad beans.

Busymom - LOVE your blog.

And I promise, the "second cup as good as the first" phenomenon is possible! In fact, I am on my third cup at the moment and it seriously tastes just like the first one I poured - FOUR HOURS AGO.

I will share my secret with you...Firt of all, you must RUN out and purchase the Cuisinart Grind & Brew with the Thermal Carafe. There is no burner, so there is no chance of scorching and the carafe keeps the coffee HOT for hours. (No, I don't work for Cuisinart, I have just tried every coffee-maker known to man, and this one has won me over.)

Secondly, you must use a good bean. I prefer Starbucks Holiday Blend, but any Starbucks will do in a pinch.

Thirdly, before you pour your first cup, you must STIR the coffee well. Then with each cup you pour you can either re-stir or swirl it around in the carafe.

This should provide you with excellent coffee all day. The grind & brew is a little extra trouble as far as the cleaning each time but is so worth it if you gotta have good coffee every day.

Good luck to you!!

I think that first cup of coffee is kind of like starry-eyed romantic love. Doesn't last forever!

I have this percolator just like my mom had in the 60s. I will never go back to a drip coffee maker again. The fact that it makes space shuttle takeoff sounds while it's brewing is also mildly entertaining. Especially as I'm bleary eyed in rumpled p.j.s and trying to muster forth the courage to venture outside in the 12-degree pre-dawn to feed the horse herd. The whinnying begins the moment I flick the kitchen light on. Kind of a Pavlov's dog thing, except with hungry equines.

My idea of good coffee is coffe that's so hot you can barely sip it! Combine the percolator with a good Starbucks blend and the second cup is still f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s. There is a certain amount of grunge though by the end of the pot.

In my office, it all tastes like ass so it doesn't really matter. Still, caffeine is caffeine.

What a Great Blog you have and yes I have to Agree. The 2nd cup is not as good as the 1st. Thats why my coffee holds 24oz...LOL
