Don't move!On the way home from vacation, we stopped to get gas, and, naturally it was a pre-pay pump, the bane of my attempted cash existence. I walked into the store and told the clerk I wanted to fill up on pump 5 (Busy Dad and the kids had gone next door to get food):
Clerk (looks around nervously while contemplating turning on pump 5): "I, uh, uh...you're going to stay in here, aren't you?"
Me: "I'd be happy to, but, that would make it a tad harder to fill up the car, I would think, but, I could try."

I can only imagine the look on his face as he tried to contemplate whether or not it was possible ;)
One of the reasons I am actually glad we have "Full Service" by law here in NJ.
We do an all-cash budget, too, but use our debit card for gas. Not only is it inconvenient to keep unbuckling car seats, it was costing me more in impulse buys every time I stepped foot in the store!
The guy most certainly has a PhD?! Did you just leave a bunch of wadded up dollar bills on the counter? That's what I would have done, and also said "By the time you get all of those straightened out and counted, I'll have my tank filled and be back in here to settle up!"
And here's yer sign.
My fave gas place is Quick Trip. I can start the pump outside and then go inside. I can make some coffee (for only 1/4th the price of Starbucks! And - to me- just as good!) and then when the pump is done, I can pay inside. Then go out and replace the pump on the thingie (that's the technical term). It's a great process. I HATE having to go pay first, or having to go put the pump handle away before I can pay or any of that jazz.
I'm all about process efficiency - gives me more time to internet. ha!
I don't understand why you would have to stay in there - I mean, you gave him the cash, what else does he want?!
The one saving grace of NJ (my lovely home state)? - fullservegas...
Maybe he was just lonely....!
What drama. More, give me more.
Are you sure you didn't walk in in the middle of a holdup? Was there some other creepy looking person lurking behind the chip aisle?
