Humor of the ages

My mother, a Catholic, can't get to Mass anymore (advanced lung cancer). The (retired) Bishop of this Diocese vists her at home, and, brings Communion to her each Sunday. The man is nearly 90, has had a host of health problems, but, maintains a near full schedule, and, drives many miles each day to see home-bound parishoners. He seriously "takes a licking, and, keeps on ticking", as he has nearly met his maker on several occasions.

He called my parents' house this morning apologizing profusely that he would not be able to visit today.

Me: "That's fine, please don't worry about it. I hope that everything is OK with you, though."
Bishop (rather disgustedly): "Yeah, they put a pacemaker in me last night, and, they tell me I can't drive for a week!"

Maybe this is one of those things where you "had to be there", but, it took all I could do not to laugh out loud at the way he said it.

So, I tell my mother he can't come, and, I offered to find someone else to bring Communion.

My mother: "Oh, no big deal, I can skip a week. If I look like I'm tanking, though, you might want to go on and call someone else."

Age really is nothing but a number, I guess! If that's the case - I chose 17! Yah for 17! I added ya to my yahoo just incase you are wondering who the heck it is... it's me!

At least she has easy spirits.

You didn't have to be there ... I busted out laughing too!
I want to be like him when I get that age - actually I'd like to be like that now.

I love it!! It is truly funny, there or not! LOL

Let's hope that Mom doesn't "tank" anytime soon .

I send good vibes often, for all that's worth.

Your mom is priceless.

No tanking for her any time in the near future, please.

That's a good one! Best wishes to your mom - she seems to be in good spirits!

Your Mom's a riot! as is the bishop. I hope I'm as cool as them when I get older!

I first met Busy Grandma's Bishop friend about three years ago at a fundraiser for a local Catholic school. It was late, and we were both waiting for the valet to bring our cars. Bright and early next morning I was up to go to Mass at my daughter's school. She was doing one of the readings or something like that. Anyway, I thought it was a bit early after a late evening out on a "school night."

Guess who the priest was who officiated the Mass? Yep, the same retired octogenarian Bishop from the night before.

He's an amazing man.

Life goes on.....

I had the same question when they put in my pacemaker. Of course, I was 26...I hope I'm still going strong at his age. Happy thoughts to Busy Grandmother and a great feeling that she won't be tanking anytime soon. :-)

Humor - it is what keeps us young!

I remember when my late FIL was on his list of weekly visits. Talk about faith in action! The Bishop's example had a lot to do with my husband's conversion the following year.

I just shot doughnut out my nose from laughing. My aunt now has lung cancer. This is my first with the cancer bug. Back to being a sandwich for me but I have my cousin to help out on this round.
Hope the priest is back at it soon.

My grandma-in-law likes to joke about how many times she's already received her last rites. I hope the priest is up and about quickly!

LOL... That was so cute. Just the smile I needed this afternoon. ;) (and I'm Catholic too so the humor was perfect).
