Anatomy of Back to School Preparation

2 weeks before the first day of school:

-Make vow to get the kids in bed earlier and up earlier so the first day back isn't so difficult.
-Put "go to bank" on the list of errands to get dollar bills and quarters to be prepared for school lunch money.
-Set schedule for the procrastinating reader in the family to finish summer reading books.
-Shop for school supplies.
-Find latest school documents that contain important dates.

1 week before school starts:

-Make vaguely non-sensical threats along the lines of, "If you don't get to bed sooner, it's going to be really hard for you to get up on Thursday."
-Move the "go to bank" reminder to the dashboard of car.
-Spend quality time with procrastinator reading summer reading books "together".
-Look at school supplies in their nice white Target bags on the dining room table.
-Feel confident that the important documents are either in the "upstairs pile" or the "downstairs pile".

Two days before school:

-Decide that an 11pm bedtime is "making prgress".
-Hope Busy Girl comes back from the beach with money so they can eat lunch the first day.
-Scout Internet for book summaries so I can at least make sure he's got the "high points" what he's read. Have Fleeting thoughts of (me) reading Cliff Notes.
-Wonder where school supplies went.
-Ask someone if the first day of school is a half day or a whole day.

Stay tuned.

It's no different for teachers. RUABelle has been in a two week tizzy/crying jag. It's been fun at the ole Cee household...

Your last sentence hit home with me because I didn't realize until the afternoon before the first day of school, that the first day was only a half-day. Bad mother!

Good luck! (I'm still trying to figure out the bus schedule here, maybe I'll just let them sleep outside at the end of the driveway the night before.)

Ha! You've got this down to a science. I especially like the important papers either being in the downstairs pile or the upstairs pile... if you find mine in there, please send them over and I'll e-mail you the postage!

That sounds just about right. Just make sure they have clean socks and underwear for the first day. And hopefully, brand new sneakers.

LilZ has already left his lunch box at school THREE TIMES and school just started last week. Save me.

Ooooh, yeah. We are buying a house. Then we're going on vacation for a week. Somewhere during moving, school will start. We'll see if my kids manage to show up. Heh. As for school supplies, um. I think I'll just pretend I didn't hear that part.

Charlie starts school tomorrow. Still on my list: confirm pick-up time, and ask someone where EXACTLY I go to get him at the end of the day.

Because I guess I really DO want him back. Sort of.

Oh My! This sound like New Orleans house 100%. and I mean really! School starts tomorrow and the boy is only finishing the book report as I type.

aaaahh, yes, the New Orleans House of Procrastinators!

I think we're a little behind on summer reading here, too. But teenagers get tricky with their answers on whether or not they've finished.

so when is the first day of school for you guys? My older son starts next Tuesday (BIG SCHOOL!) and the baby and I go back after Labor Day!

heh, it sounds all very familiar.

OMG. I cant even imagine what it will be like to get ready for my baby to go to school. I want to cry just thinking of it. I am sure it is a super busy time!!! I found you through blondemom and we are in the same area so I wanted to say HEY!

I have officially given up trying to do anything with the bedtime; none of us will sleep the first couple of nights before school anyway. Then we'll be so exhausted that it will be fine after that. School supplies--did you HAVE to mention that? Thankfully, this year I don't have to buy the graphing calculator for OVER $100. That hurt.

Go to your school tomorrow and ask why they aren't using www.mylunchmoney.com. Makes life so much easier. Put money in your child's account, on line, and then they get debited for what they buy. No more chasing lunch money in the mornings!

I am all for getting a lot done and teachers...uh... teaching. But there needs to be some balance.

Holy Shitamole is RIGHT!

Geez.
