Can you hear me now?

A popular fad is for kids to use cell phone ring tones in such a high pitch that adults can't hear them. Check it out.

Hell, no, I'm not going to tell you how I did.

ADDED: I was playing them again just now, and, Busy Girl came running in from the next room and said, "What was that?"

I could hear all of them (two were REALLY hard to hear though.. I had to put the computer speaker up to my ear)... but my 2-1/2-year-old ran from ANOTHER ROOM yelling "Mommy! What IS that?!"

I asked him if it was loud (it was one of the really quiet ones I could barely hear) and he said, emphatically, "yes!"

So, now I am feeling quite old and decrepit at only 29!

Ha, I can't even check to see if I can hear them...my computer went silent (no room for the speakers) about two months ago when I had to move to the kitchen during our remodel/addition. So I'll just pretend that I could hear them all - yeah right.

Then again, with all the banging from construction, I probably couldn't hear them...even if I COULD hear them.

I hope they're kidding. I always thought I had pretty good hearing.

I bet they drive dogs crazy!

Holy cow! What will they think of next? I could hear the bug tone, but not the cricket. I didn't go on to check the others. Our parents were the lucky ones...the only thing I did in secret my entire high school career was go to the beach and drink California Coolers!!!!

That's crazy! I would miss so many phone calls if I had one of those ringtones!

I totally thought this was insane...until I tried it. I could only hear the Bug, Covert Ops and Maximum Security. Nothing on the rest. But the kids were like, "What the hell was that noise???"

This just adds another indignity to the already-growing list of things we have to endure as we age. How sad!

Wow. I always prided myself in being able to hear high-pitched stuff pretty well (computer monitors going bad especially drive me nuts)... But I couldn't hear the last four, even though my speakers popped when the sound stopped.

No speaking children to test this on, though.... However, I may have to come back to that site later and see if my seven month old reacts to them.

And I agree - these sounds must drive animals batty, particularly dogs.

Um, it probably helps if I unmute my computer, right?

Yikes my ears! The ring tones give me pain. Ouch.

My ears are ringing now! Make it stop!!

I've seen that- I thought it was odd- I didn't know what the purpose was. I could hear them, but I was just annoyed. It kind of gave me a headache. Cingular will do anything to get you over your minutes- even if it means geting your kids to sneak phone calls with secret ringtones, LOL.

Man those made my brain vibrate...they'd be cool if my ears didn't want to explode after a few seconds of listening. Sheesh.

I could hear 4 of them and they were like a drill in my brain!
I would like to pretend that the others produced no sound at all and someone is justt messing with me. :)

Wow....I guess you would be able to tell when the dog started going crazy!

I wish they would make noisy toys that I can't hear. Perhaps this science has applications in the "other annoying battery operated stuff" category?

Ouch! That's just horrible!

Whew, I could hear them all.

Think about it though; the kids aren't clanking around in the kitchen, or sweeping the garage, or mowing the lawn or vacuuming the living room. They're sitting on the couch or at the computer or taking a nap with their cell phone resting near them. Somewhere! It's like an appendage.

I read/heard about this a couple months ago... I can hear the 'ring' just fine.

I guess that means I have teenaged ears that haven't caught up with my middle aged woman boobs and thighs yet. ;)

I just played the last one which I couldn't hear at all but now my poor dog is going crazy. I bookmarked the site so I could play it for my kids when they get home. Freaky. I could hear the bug one and now my ears feel irritated.

I could hear 3 of them. I think I was imagining I could hear a few others.

Wow... I'm almost in tears now I feel so old. I couldn't hear the last two. I always believed that you're as old as you feel, but now there's hard evidence that I am just plain ol' OLD. Thanks for putting a little sunshine in my day Busy Mom...NOT.

By the way... I'm a high school teacher. I'm wondering how many of my kids are getting calls that I'm not aware of. They're sitting there laughing at me "That old fart can't hear a thing."

Have to wait to try this at home, but I'm sure I'll hear it - I have amazing hearing. Just ask my kids who have a sign language all their own to try and get around me;)

As an aside - I just downloaded Margarittaville as my ring tone - I'm thinking when I retire I want to be just like Jimmy Buffett only with mittens and snow boots.

I cranked up my volume and was able to hear a couple of them, but ouch!

If I were a teacher, I would SO be confiscating any cell phones used in my class. At my daughter's school, I think the rule is that if a teacher catches a student using one, it gets taken but returned to the parent. That's for the first infraction. The second time, it's donated to charity. Yea, school!

My husband and daughter always are able to hear very high pitched sounds that some security systems in stores put out. My husband probably could hear these tones, but while I could feel one or two, I couldn't hear them. When DD16 gets home, I'll ask her about it. Very interesting, though, and annoying!

Ow! Those are annoying. The last one I barely could hear so I don't feel too old yet.

Okay, BusyMom, I just conducted an experiment with my 5th graders and they could hear everyone of those ring tones. I can't hear a damned thing. Must be old beyond my days and deaf as a stone.

I could hear all of them, but I did have the volume cranked all the way up on my computer. I kept looking at my 2 year old for some reaction, but she didn't flinch. Do I need to have her hearing checked? She DOES have a problem listening to me. I think that's different, though.

Well Thanks! It woke the cat who came to investigate. I had to turn the sound up to hear a few! How cool. I am downloading a few for my daughter :)

I could not hear the last one (spy?),but every kid in my house, from age 7 to 14 was like, "Wow! What IS that?" The 7year old could hear it on his way up the stairs. And I'm such a geez it never occurred to me to turn the volume up. I'm doomed. They'll be taking over in no time...

I feel old.

I couldn't hear them. Evidently, me and one 93 year old lady were the only two on the 'net who couldn't. Everyone else I've come across can hear them fine. Or else they all got together just to make me feel old.

I heard them all and so did my cats who went crazy! I'm surprised I heard them though. Teaching music makes me very sensitive to sound but I was sure the recorders and other lovely sounds I encounter daily were affecting my hearing.

I could hear all of them but for some I had to turn speakers up all the way. My kids heard them all right away....and actually said some of them hurt their ears.

Well, I don't look 40, but I do have 40 year old ears. I tripped over your site while looking for 12 year old girl birthday info and leave feeling every day of my years!! BTW, said 11 almost 12 year old heard them all. I only missed 3...but still...

I could hear all but the last two. It was very disconcerting to discover that -- I thought, oh it hasn't started yet, must be "buffering" or something. Alas, it was halfway finished. :(

As for dogs, at least if your dog is almost 11, they won't notice a thing. Same dog DOES respond to a crumb hitting the floor two rooms away, so I think she is making out just fine in this world.

I could hear one of the 4 I tried. My gawd, 40 years old and my hearing is shot? I had no idea...

Ok, at what point do you lose the ability to hear them? I'm going to be 24 this month, and I could BARELY hear most of them, with the volume all the way up. There were 1 or 2 I couldn't hear at all. I definitely couldn't hear them as ringers, I'd never notice it in a room with other people. Oh, god, I'm old already??

Oh, and my 4 year olds didn't seem to notice me playing them... hmmm....
