Gearing up for Appliance Failure - The 2007 Edition

My, The Great Appliance Failure starts earlier and earlier (or, late, however you want to look at it).

What does it mean when a desktop computer keeps randomly turning itself off? It doesn't seem to be overheated.

Please, please tell me that it's something as simple as the power supply.

If it's not, just lie to me since one of our HVAC units crapped out last night and we have no heat downstair$.

P.S. Before I forget, Jamie, please tell Alan I haven't stolen the equipment he loaned me, I just haven't had time to deal with getting it fixed, yet.

This is a disaster if you can't get to the itunes store for the ipods.

I know. I just got one, and I'm afraid it might change my life.

Mine did that a couple of years ago, and guess what? It WAS the power supply! Not only that, but I had a few weeks left on the warranty. I must have been living right or something.

No problem! ;) I'll let him know.

When in doubt, back up. I know, I know. I'm not much help.

It certainly could be the power supply, but random restarts and shutdowns are also a symptom of overheating. Too much dust in the tower (not casting aspersions!) or inadequate ventilation can cause it.

Let me know if you would like us to do a free pickup...you are in our 15 mile freebie radius.

Aw look, a husband and wife commenting team!!

You wanna swap referal names for HVAC installations?...ours went out the day after Santa left... I'm thinking elfen conspiracy or sumpin'.

Oh ouch- already? You are rivaling my car experiences 2006 where we put the 5th bedroom and 3rd full bath on the mechanic's home. Merry Christmas to him, eh?

Before freaking out, try using a can on condensed air around the fan and any ventilating thingies on the casing. I did that like a year ago and have been overheating-free since!

Certainly sounds like overheating to me.

I would make sure that the fan on the CPU was working properly and and use JenBen's idea of hitting all the fans with a can of condensed air to clear out all the fans.

The other possibility is that the memory is shot, but that usually causes reboots and not shutdowns.

My Great Appliance Failure has begun as well - though not the computer. My hand mixer. I've had it for six years, and now it decides the only speed available is "power boost". And right as I was whipping up my daughter's birthday cake! Oh, well, it was a bridal shower gift and is much cheaper to replace than fixing the computer.

I vote for the overheating. Go with what Latte Man said first.

My desktop has been doing the same thing, but restarting itself, not shutting off completely. I think it's the memory, because the overheating sounds dubious considering that mine does it when the computer has only been on for a short time.

I don't know. But when you find out, please post.
