A Public Service AnnouncementDo you have a child starting kindergarten this fall?
Perhaps it's time for registration. Perhaps your school requires a birth certificate for registration.
Today's information nugget: A vague idea of where the birth certificates might be in the house is not really good enough to satisfy that pesky requirement.
Just make sure you're not that parent who really isn't even positive you actually got a birth certificate on say, oh, your third child...

Thanks for the reminder. My 4th will start in the fall...and I really have no idea where her birth certificate might be...
I was just mentioning to my husband last night that I need to get our third-born's birth certificate...certainly before #4 arrives!!! You know (at least in our state) they now require a notarized signature of one of the parents to get a birth certificate.
I did that!!! I had to go GET one for my third child!! Delurking to say hi, love your blog.
God love you if you DO have to go get that birth certificate down at the state birth certificate headquarters where there is absolutely NO parking for people who might need a vital record, for something, say, VITAL.
We actually lost the kids' papers once. ALL of them. The records from Korea, the adoption papers, the citizenship papers, the birth certificates. They actually survived our house fire, but I managed to "misplace" them.
We found them in the extra shower we have in our finished basement, next to our marriage certificate, which Lintilla was about to tear up if I didn't find the kids' records.
Safety deposit boxes are our friends.
Just photocopy it like we do. It works well for the IRS too when we say we have 13 kids.
Do you have a nannycam set up in my office or something? Because guess what I was looking for earlier?
Along the lines of Genuine...I have a file of copies of birth certificates for the boys. It seems like every.flippin.thing they do requires one - basketball, baseball, school, auditions for community plays...everyone wants to make sure they weren't hatched I suppose.
Oh, and that birth certificate is awfully handy if your trying to take your little one on a day trip to, say, Victoria BC...
No b.c., you say? No BC, either.
*sigh*
I have since gotten several certified copies. Just in case I lose the original again. If I ever had it. I'm still not sure!
Is that the truth or what. I have four kids who were born in four different hospitals (one even in DE) because of doctor changes and moves. I am lucky I can find my kids all at the same time let alone their birth certificates. And now my church wants their baptismal certificates for CCD classes. People want too much information. Have a great day and keep up the busy work.

I had to get my daughter's to register her for school last summer so I went ahead and got my son's at the same time. Look at me, thinking ahead! I had to go downtown and get them since I needed to register her the next day. It wasn't so bad. My biggest hurdle was the parallel parking!
I have a cousin who was born in Nashville and this past spring she needed a certified copy of her b.c. to get a passport. She lives in VA, now. She was quite impressed with TN's website and system for getting b.c.'s processed and expedited. Who knew our state could actually get something right for once?
I had to get one for my FIRST baby, who started pre-k this past year. I ended up getting all 3 birth certificates (for all 3 kids) while I was there, and I have them kept in my day planner, in an envelope. You know, so if anyone steals my day planner, I'll have to go down to town hall and get more copies.
See, I thought ahead there. lol
That reminds me, I'm missing some adoption paperwork on 2/3's of my kids.
Hmm.
*note: call our lawyer*
Good luck with that kindergarten thing!
I was so psyched to happen upon my kids' birth certificates while actually cleaning out a drawer last week! What luck!
If it makes you feel better, I had to go get my 1st born's birth certificate on the day I registered him for kindergarten. 5 years obviously wasn't enough time for me to do that task earlier.
The only reason why I have my soon to be kindergartener's birth certificate now is that we moved east a few states. I thought ahead and realized how impossible driving 18 hours roundtrip in one day for one piece of paper would be.
In Illinois, at least, you have to get them at the city or village hall in the city where the birth took place. Some places (schools, for a passport) need a notarized copy with the seal, and most other places are happy with a copy.
My husband needed his (from a city 100 miles away), and we were able to do it by faxing his license and signature and some other verifying identification to the clerk, and then it was mailed to him.
Now if only I could find the second son's Social Security card...
Thanks for the tip. I really had no idea until my neighbor told me last weekend. I'm registering Caitlin in April so I need to hunt down that birth certificate!
We never got them for either of our kids. From what I understand (I wasn't listening too well either time someone told me at the hospital) I think (like in IL) we have to go to the courthouse of the area and get one. Guess I should get on to that. Thanks for the heads up.
THANK YOU for the reminder... My youngest needs to get registered the first week of Feb. I *think* his certificate is in the safety deposit box. You know, the one I don't have a key too. I now, officially, need to solve that little problem.
Thank God the only one! My 18 month old still does not have his.
I have the kids birth certificates but I have no clue where my marriage certificate is. This would not be such a huge issue if were not married in a different country. Guess I could use it as an excuse to go back to Jamaica.
I'm good on the birth certificates...but you just reminded me that I still haven't gotten the copy of his Social Security card yet. You would think that I would have remembered I'd need that from registering one last year...but no! Better get on that one!
Your baby CAN'T be starting school!!! Time flies!
Oof! Safe deposit box, anyone?
Hey! The things you don't realize you have to be responsible for when you become a parent! Don't you feel sometimes like you're lost sight of who the hell you are?! Check out my blog on www.whenmomshappy.com.
I will be doing the happy dance this fall when child #3 goes off to Kindergarten. Thanks for the reminder on the birth certificate - I think its in the safe but I'll go check.
