C is for cervical spine and curmudgeon

Exciting evening.

Busy Girl is at camp, and, I work in the infirmary every so often there.

Tonight was one of my nights, and, as I turned off the highway into the front gate, I was met by an ambulance, and, the rescue squad leaving camp.

Hmmm. Never a good sign, but, they weren't running emergency traffic or anything, so, I just continued on into camp.

I walked into the office, and, people were going about their business, and said, "hey".

I said, "OK, I'll bite. Why did an ambulance and the rescue squad just drive out of here?"

"Oh", they said, "there was an accident at the lake".

I replied, "Aaaannnnnd?"

"Yeah, that was New Orleans Tween, she dove off the tower, and, hurt her back. Her arms and legs were tingling, and, they went in after her with the spine board, and, called an ambulance."

Alrighty then.

However, I also knew Busy Girl was sick, so, I had to stay and track her down first, to look at her throat before I went to Major Medical Center with New Orleans Tween (someone was with her).

I arrived at MMC, and, New Orleans Tween had already gone to get a CT scan, so, I waited, and, she returned soon, still in her c-collar.

Many uncomfortable (for her, as she was still flat on the stretcher) minutes hours later, they came to tell us that the CT was OK, and, that she had just strained something.

She was fine, though a bit sore, and, we went on back out to camp.

Gotta go back out there in the morning to get Busy Girl and take her for a throat culture.

One thing I learned from this whole thing is that I gotta get a new cell phone.

I couldn't get reception at the hospital to call New Orleans Friend, so, I had to try to remember how to make a long distance phone call with a calling card I knew I had buried in my wallet somewhere.

Making a regular long distance call never seemed so archaic until then.

Oh, I also learned, during our interminable wait, that the camp employee in charge of the infirmary has a mother who she described as being "older".

Mom is 43.

Oy.

Michael? That was for you.

Now, you kids? Get offa my lawn.

Lordy, you handled that a heckuva lot better than I would've. They WENT IN TO THE WATER WITH A SPINE BOARD?

They HAVE A SPINE BOARD at all?

Despite all the nice things you've said I don't think Boo will be going to camp after all. Ever.

Yike.

On local news the other day they were describing an acident scene. THe trooper sais the injured ranged from the very young, 9 months, to the elderly-between 50 & 60 years old !!!

Um...didn't Busy Girl get sick last year at camp? Or, am I dreaming?

Glad to hear NOT is okey dokey - that's kinda scary!

I knew 43 was old. That's why I am groovyOLDlady.

We just did the Trek Across Maine - 180 miles, 1800 bikers, and zillions of emergency vehicle. I got quite tense everytime one started with the lights and siren.

Several accidents, but no deaths or dismemberments. Whew!

O.M.G. Your life is never dull. Glad all is ok with notw...hope bg feels better soon. It sucks to be sick at camp.

43 is older? Ouch. I better start lying about my age now before i get there. LOL

I think I saw this episode on "Everybody Loves Raymond."

I can see a camper thinking that a 43 YO mom was older, but an employee? Was it at least a teenage employee and not a real grownup????

Glad NO Tween wasn't serioulsy injured!

Happy to hear that the accident wasn't so bad - although, my kids would question their having fun and my insisting they NOT get hurt - being grown up sucks, though!
