Vacation Food

We're on vacation, and, I cannot get this food thing right.

This year is a little different, we're eating out less, and, we're out in the middle of nowhere.

This is the fist vacation we've taken with my dad since my mother died last summer (it's almost been a year, wild, huh?). She was the one who liked to eat out all the time.

I enjoy it, too, but, it's hard to get the kids off the beach, and, the boys just aren't good restaurant goers.

No, they're not the unruly kids you see running around, they just bitch through the whole meal.

There's also not much around here, even if we wanted to go out, I'm not sure where we'd do it.

I loaded down the Taurus X with food before we left even though Busy Dad made fun of me.

I was vindicated when we got here late Saturday night, and, there was nowhere to eat. I was able to make an entire meal out of the stuff in the cooler and plastic boxes.

Boo yah.

But, I've had the worst time predicting what people will and won't eat, and, the nearest grocery is 10 miles away.

I absentmindedly threw in some chips and salsa before we left, and, my dad ate nearly all of it by Sunday. I've never ever seen him eat salsa.

We got more salsa, and, it disappeared, too. So, I got a 3rd, and some more chips, and, now no one will touch it.

Now, I can't keep bread in the house. Every time I turn around, it's gone, but, I want to be careful not to get too much because I don't want to have to transport it home.

Ice cream is nearly gone, and, I just bought it last night!

Forgot to get apples at the store, and, now, everyone wants to know where they are, and, I can't keep myself in enough lemonade. Don't know what that's about, but, it's time to get more at the store.

I'm just not used to having to plan food this well on vacation, and, I somehow got here with 5 boxes of cereal bars.

Apple cinnamon or mixed berry? There's 40 of them in the pantry.

Ah yes, the age old beach craving. I think there needs to be research done into the connection between salt air and the desire to inhale one ton of food per day. Not to mention the weird things you want to eat, like nothing but peaches for two days, and then you're sick of peaches.

My mom's solution to keeping the family in food was to go to Sam's Club before we left, and stock up on snacks and such. When we got to the beach, we had a big meeting with everyone who came (we always took other kids to the beach with us), and she laid down the law. "We have plenty of food," she would say, "But once it's gone, it's gone. So think about it before you eat three Little Debbie Cakes."

Sounds like one of my camping trips, only there are no grocery stores and bread doesn't stuff into a backpack very well.

Sorry I ate all the ice cream.

See, now this is precisely why, when I go on vacation, I like to go to places that deal with such things. TheWife has been talking about timeshares or renting condos, etc. But that requires planning and thinking ahead... and cooking. Which, while I enjoy... I'M ON VACATION!

And all that planning and cooking and stuff, just feels like work.

Oh, this is EXACTLY what I fought with in Destin! And, since we had so many people, we had to cook TONS of food and then deal with leftovers! We did very well with fruit and goldfish crackers... but nobody touched the giant box of popcorn that we brought from The Costco...

Sounds like us on one of our camping trips!
I usually plan breakfast and dinner. Lunch is usually snacking on chips and queso. Did you pack any Velveeta and rotel tomatoes?

We leave sunday for another camping trip.
I'm tired of burgers and spaghetti. *sigh*
Oh! There's always hotdogs!

I'm laughing to myself because we just went through this, We went to a timeshare with my parents and shared the condo,, My mom decided to jump the gun and go grocery shopping without me.. We were gone most of the day and went grocery shopping later in the day.. We returned to find duplicates of almost everything down to the spreadable blackberry fruit.. We barely had enough room to shove all the crap into 2 cars on the way home.. Mom.. if you're listening.. Wait for me next time.. k? The kids as I lovingly call them "picky "and "pickier" are rediculous with their eating habits, If you
figure it all out one day.. CLUE ME IN..

ugh, no thanks! I'm stuffed from shrimp & catfish po-boys and boiled crabs we just ate. I can't even THINK of more food! blech.

and btw, no road trip for the new orleans family. but that's ok, it;s along drive.

My family would do the same thing with the salsa. I think we'd survive on grilled hotdogs, goldfish crackers, and PBJs. Good luck!

I was searching for articles about this on Google and stumbled on your item. I found it to be very useful. Thanks
