So.
It's hot around these parts.
Really, really hot.
Our A/C unit just wasn't keeping up, and, the house was too warm.
We pretended everything was fine for a few days, because, well, who wants to face the possibility of the demise of a 15 year old HVAC unit, especially when the $5-at-a-time money suck of back-to-school is imminent?
But, it wasn't fine.
My 83 year old MIL was sweating like a racehorse after cooking dinner last night, and, I was kind of having trouble, you know, breathing because of the weight of the heat.
But, no money=AC fine! Right?
The jig was up this morning, so, I called the family friend who installed and maintains it.
I told him that I realized it may just be because of the oppressive heat, but, that the unit, though running, just wasn't cooling properly.
I asked him to come by, and, if the problem was fatal, or, over $100, just to lay the tools down, back away slowly, and, go buy us a box fan, instead.
So, I reluctantly called, and, he came by to take a look.
I was at work, so I asked my MIL what he said:
"He said to tell you that if you turn it on, (the compressor) it will work better that way."
Don't know what he charged for that, yet.
Too embarrassed to ask.

That's kind of like when I took my car to the shop because the check engine light was on, because my gascap wasn't screwed on all the way.
Cost me 75$ >.<
Oh that is funny....thanks for the laugh.
Are you sure we aren't related?
BWAHAHAHA!!!!
Great moments in home repair. I can relate.
Reminds me of the time that I took my brand new camera into the shop, extremely upset, because it wasn't working. And I had paid GOOD MONEY for that thing, dang it.
The gentleman behind the counter emerged from the back room with a pack of batteries and explained they had to be put into the camera in order for it to work.
Yeah ...
Niiiice:) Way to go sistah.
Uh, p.s. - it is something i would do myself.
It was frozen and needed to thaw? It happens.
I'm speaking as the wife of an a/c man.
It's hot here too. He's busy these days. : )
I'm thankful I'm married to him.
Sounds like one of those annoying IT Techs on the helpline: "Did you turn it on? Are you sure it's plugged in? Are you looking directly at the screen?"
I guess, just this one time, they win. Don't sweat it though (haaaa! Sweat! A/C! Erm....ha)
I'll make a mental note of that!
The MIL will never let you live that one down.
We don't really need AC mostly here in WA, but I've done that same thing with the cable. I ranted about it not working, but I hadn't switched something on. Oops.
That is just dang funny! Did you not realize the your electric bill was like a gazillion dollars cheaper?
Soo... seriously? How do you turn it on? I thought that, if you turn the thermostat to "cooler" and lower the temperature, the thing comes on! Hunh!
Oh man...I called the service dudes out once and they showed me how to flip the breaker on my a/c unit - I had no idea it has a separate breaker from the rest of the house! that was $125 (weekend call).
Sadly, I don't even know what you're talking about.
I tried really hard not to laugh, really I did. But I failed. It was just darn too hard. Too funny. :) Sounds exactly like something I would do. Oh man, I'm sure that story is going to be told quite a few times in the years to come. :)
Oh yes -- so happy that no money was involved for that one --and so very funny.
It was dark when you hit the switch, right? Because in your mind, you HAD to have turned it on.
I did something similar the other day. I turned the fan on instead of the air conditioner - who knew it was a separate switch? I dripped in sweat for 2 hours before I realized my mistake.
At least it didn't cost you anything...except your pride ;)
Hilarious! Also funny? I thought you said your MIL was"swearing like a racehorse after cooking dinner"!!!
Sounds like something I would do!
Our has frozen up a few times.
Right now temp in the valley here is 106!! AC is a must right now and ours is working overtime, it kicked a breaker earlier.
Hee hee, this exact scenario happened at work today...When I got there, my coworkers kept asking me, "Is it hot in here? I am hot, what's wrong with the damn a/c unit THIS time"
But since I read this post yesterday...I checked the thermostat first and found it OFF!!
Thanks Busy Mom!!
De-lurking to tell you - you're not the only one. I had just started a new job (legal secretary here, have been for years) and my dictaphone machine would not work, not matter what I did. I called the tech out, and he said, "Uh, you have the 'pause' button pressed (none of my other machines I had ever used had a pause button). That was on my 3rd day at the job. Nice....
You ARE in good company. I thought my router was down - no power. My hubby came home and...
plugged it in!
