And so begins the steep learning curve

Since I wasn't gaining any knowledge about my new Canon Digital Rebel XT through osmosis, I decided I would attempt to show it who's boss by getting out there and "just doing it".

OK, that and Jay bought me a Flickr Pro account (go tell Jay he rocks.) that I need to put to good use.

Just because I like to torture myself (Hey there, pervy Googlers, this isn't what you had in mind, is it? Sorry 'bout that. OK, not I'm not.), I decided to try to take pictures at Busy Girl's basketball game.

120 useless pictures later, I have 120 useless pictures.

However, I know I'm trying to take pictures in one of the most difficult setting ever, especially when I have a slow lens (18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6), but, well it's the only lens I have.

75 million settings later (pardon my mad knuckle-dragger Photoshop skillz):

I call this one "Egregious Foul" (Busy Girl is the foul-er):

If you're going to foul, make it a good one

Waiting

So, therefore, thanks to some of you, I've bought myself another lens for the camera I can't work.

I love the title of your blog. Love the book you are reading. And you might love the coffee site associated with my name if you really need as much coffee as your blog would indicate...

I was SO hoping you were going to say it was the easiest camera ever.

Go easy on them fouls, BG!

Those pics look pretty good to me! And I didn't even know there was such a thing as "slow" lens. I've been trying to get a decent picture of our cats without a flash wreaking havoc with their eyes, and have been leaning toward actually buying film for the camera that's been collecting dust in my cabinet for years. Fast film. Since my little Nikon Coolpix is pretty much stuck with its slow lens.

Will you come taqke pics of my daughter playing soccer. My camera is nowhere near as nice as yours and my pictures stink.

I thnk those are great quality pictures. Why a new lens?

Slow but sure, Mom. You're doing great.

They look like good shots to me! Glad to hear you are trying to get the hang of the new camera! You'll be a pro in no time! :-)

I just bought that lens myself recently!! I LOVE it. Though, because I had that camera with the kit lens F.O.R.E.V.E.R. it took a lot of getting used to not turning to zoom in or out!

For Christmas, hubby got me this lens: http://www.adorama.com/CA75300AF2U.html which has been awesome, but I have yet to use it for the kids sporting (or other) events. Mental note: get a monopod or something...

Good luck! Have fun!

I understand... I myself, have the big lens for my EOS D30.... luckily I can't get a picture of Imelda jumping, er guarding the 5'10" 12 year old that is in focus. Luckily, basketball ended tonight... so now I just have to contend with cheerleading and volleyball.

Oh, and that looked like a good foul to me... Did that other girl go to the line? and did she make any of them? That is the important question.

That camera is amazing (I have it). Biggest thing is just trying new things, and finding flickr groups helped me a lot. I also added you as a contact on there. Are you shooting in auto or trying out the "creative" modes (Tv, P, Av, M)?

I just happened across your blog on delightfulblogs.com and the first line of this post cracked me up. I happen to feel the exact same way about my camera which I have had for a couple of years now. I just want to know how to use it to its full potential - like now! without reading anything....Check out thepioneerwomancooks.com and she has a section on her camera. I have borrowed some of her ideas on using photoshop. Great blog.

If you learn how to work your camera are you willing to tell me how to work mine? *bangs head on desk*
Would love to take some b/w shots a the rink (with the standard issue lens) but have no idea how to make it work. GAH! I suppose the 1st step would be bringing the camera to the rink......

We got a cool new camera for Christmas, I may someday learn how to work it, but that involves sneaking it away from my husband. He's a little bit of a camera hog.

Your action shots look good to me. All the pics I have of my girl at B-Ball are of the back of her head. It seems like she turns just in time. Maybe it's accidentally on purpose. Hmmmm.

Buying new lenses was exactly why I avoided that altogether and went with a SuperZoom instead. My tendency would be to buy early and often far too many lenses.

But I must say, if these are your "bad" photos, I can't wait to see what you get when you finally get a handle on this camera.

Ok - I bought a new Nikon in November and can't for the life of me figure out the action shots! All mine are blurry - even wrestling (where they're barely moving!) Were you using your action setting? Did you use a flash? Manual or automatic focus? HELP!!! :)

Nothing to add about pictures, just wanted to thank you for the free shipping at Lands End. I finally got off my duff and ordered the stuff I wanted--so, Thanks!

Thanks for the 411. I am looking to get a good camera so that I can start taking my own stock photos to display on my blog (www.gradchild.com) instead of having to pay a buck for every decent image. I was considering this model so this info was helpful. Thanks!

My cousin (mightgirl) and I have the same camera you do. She showed me that lens the last time I saw her and I even took some photos with it. It gives a nice softness to the photo and the colors really pop. It needs good lighting, though, as it will get blurry without proper lighting. It also needs a very steady hand.

There is a metal lens that is much more expensive but this is a great deal.
