There's a new saint in town

Busy Girl will be Confirmed this year

Yes, I know.

I'll do it for you: "zealot", "organized religion", "spiritual but not religious", "sheep", "papist", "statue worshiper", "idolatry", "not baptized correctly" (insert whatever here).

Just work with me here, I have a point.

OK, OK, you got me. I have as much of a point as I usually ever have.

Actually, I feel another post coming on about Catholicism, but, that's for another time.

I may be naive, but, it's only since I've been hanging around the Internets these past few years that I've discovered how much misinformation, fascination and bias there is about Catholicism out there.

I really thought that stuff died out a century or so ago, but, I was wrong. It's just very strange to me.

Anyway...

Confirmation is a Sacrament, and, there's lots to do in preparation, such as select a confirmation name.

A confirmation name is usually that of a saint, just accept that for this story for the moment.

I asked Busy Girl if she's given any thought to a name, and, she was all, "Wha'?", as she wasn't really listening to me.

I repeated myself, and, she said, "I don't know, 'Shaniqua', I guess."

Saint Shaniqua - patron saint of txt msgs?

Wouldn't that be "Mary Shaniqua"?

I don't like discussing politics, religion or sexual orientation. Everyone has their own opinion and Heaven forbid if someone doesn't agree with them.

Congrats to Busy Girl/Shaniqua on her upcoming Confirmation. It is a big deal.

Well JPII did name a ton of new saints... are you sure there isn't some girl, Blessed Shaniqua of Oakland?

I'm not Catholic and I will be the first to admit I don't know all the saints of the Catholic church, but I pretty sure that Saniqua is NOT one of them.

Makes you wonder if she's paid attention during confirmation classes, doesn't it?

I can't wait to hear the priest's reaction! Our daughter was confirmed in December, but we Protestants don't get to choose a new name. If we did, I'm sure she'd have wanted something similar to Busy Girl's.

I must have been asleep when Saint Shaniqua was taught (which is entirely possible).

Gameboy would be confirmed this year, except he decided that he doesn't want to be Catholic. So Busy Girl can borrow the confirmation name I had all picked out for him - Issac...

It fits for BusyGirl - trust me!

http://wordbytes.org/saints/names-boys-fi.htm

I should specify that its the "Meaning" part that fits - not the actual story - that doesn't fit at all. Except at report card time at my house.

I'm going to hell for that aren't I?!

When I was born, I wasn't given a middle name, as it is tradition in my family for girls to select their confirmation name and use it as their middle name.

When I got to my first confirmation class, the nun announced that we would be reaffirming our given names as our confirmation name.

I believe I burst into tears at the announcement, but I've gotten over it... And I also slipped a middle name into my Social Security form when I changed to my married name.

I'm the first one to say I'm not on board with organized religion, but as far as I can tell you're not super whackadoo crazy about it...which means you're OK with me. As Thomas Jefferson said [and I paraphrase here], it doesn't hurt me if you say there are 20 gods or no gods. Have at it.

Mr. Fish had to go through CCD classes and all that when he was a kid, but I don't think he ever actually got confirmed. Although I think it would have been worth it for him if his confirmation name involved Shaniqua. *grin*

Ok, I almost blew water on my laptop when I read this...

When my middle child was about 4, she asked to change her name to Shaniqua because she was tired of people saying Abby Abby Abby all the time.

Hmmm...maybe Shaniqua means something spiritual to her?

I'm a moderator for Work it, Mom! and wanted to invite you to become a member. We have tons of forums and support groups for busy working moms such as yourself. Also we have the option to write articles for other members. We don't have restrictions on linking to yourself in articles, and we don't require exclusivity. So it may help boost traffic. (not that you need it by the looks of things) Hope to see you there!

Mine is Bridgette, but if I had known Shaniqua was a saint I totally would have rolled that way instead.

Tell her I said: Congratulations on your Confirmation. May your faith and love grow stronger every day.

patron saint of hair extensions?
I went with Bernadette at the time-a million years ago-can you change them when you get older? and what would that entail :)

Sometimes the ol' "confirmation" thing doesn't quite stick, says this lapsed Catholic. My husband was confirmed many moons ago too, but has lapsed even further than I have. Oh well, since we're divorced and remarried, it's not like we get to play anyway, really.

I know what you mean, kind of, from growing up in the church and going to Catholic school - it's surprising to find out the misconceptions out there (no pun intended). And the lapsed Catholic I married has shown me that not all the wrong ideas are on the outside.

Anyway, may Saint Shaniqua be a good patron to Busy Girl!

Please, please let her share that with the priest and see what he says. And then share it, of course!

You have heard of Saint Shaniqua - Short for Shaniqua-califragelisticexpealidocious, a worldly woman who gave up her umbrella to save the movie industry from Walt Disney... or something like that.

I love it.
Perhaps there is a saint shaniqua...and we just don't know about her :) She's one of those hidden ones...or like others on here, I fell asleep in class on that day.

At least she didn't say Britney.

Wait...you mean to say that there isn't a Saint Shaniqua?

I happen to work with a young woman by that name, different spelling, but same pronunciation. She is an outstanding person, well-respected in her field and hilarious to be around. So, actually, Busy Girl might want to stick with that saint. In my book, she is someone a kid can look up to.

Fretting over what kind of internetty garbahge you have been subjected to. Hope her day is beautiful and that you have a good handkerchief. I think I must have gone through a whole box of kleenex when it was my kids' turn.

Hilarious!!

Wasn't Shaniqua the patron (or would that be "matron"?) saint of Mascara?

I think Saint Shaniqua made it to the finals on American Idol one year (and JP the first, we all know, was a HUGE AI fan). That's pretty much a shoe-in to the Pearly Gates, if there ever was one.

You won't catch any hell from me about talking religion; I'm too busy dodging lightning bolts of my own.

I knew about the saint's name thing, but I always assumed that Catholic kids always acted very reverent about confirmation. (As opposed to the total heathens in my Episcopalian confirmation class.)

Then I found my friend Claudia S. picked "Bernadette" because she wanted her initials to be CBS.

I agree with you. There is a ton of misinformation about Catholicism on these Internets. I've noticed that when I say I'm Catholic on the blog, or talk about it on a blog, people freak right out entirely. I can't figure it out.

Um, okay, what else exactly is there to be said. Shaniqua it is, I'd say. I mean, come on, the people have spoken. You know, your child and her saint name has the power to modernize the church in ways that no one before has been able to do. It's a gift I tell you, a gosh-darned gift! And I have to say that nothing on the internet about Catholics could be as bad as my Nana who believed and told us that Catholics ate little Baptist children during their magic ceremonies. Yes, ate, she said ate, but we never got her to tell us what kind of sauce. So now it's your turn so 'fess up, was it a nice hollandaise or was it a marsala?

Kudos to Busy Girl/Shaniqua regardless of the sauce!

Linda and I must have been confirmed around the same time, they made me "reconfirm" my baptismal name too. How boring is that?

I'm always pleasantly surprised when I find other "normal" Catholic bloggers out there. I mean, it's not a big deal, it's just kinda cool. Course I don't blog much about being Catholic either.

And you didn't tell her "Shaniqua don't live her no mo(re)"???????

Duh, that would be live HERE no mo

She's the saint of shake your groove thang, right?

And, I thought she was already named after a saint? (yes, that was shameless flattery!)

As the mama of toddlers/small kids I would say Saint Shaniqua is the patrion saint of the Backyardigans, right?

On a more serious note there isa website about saints (what isn't there a website about) it's been a while but being Catholic Lite, I went through a period of being curious about all these saints and would visit it often to learn more/kill time at work. Anyway, maybe she could find Saint Shaniqua on there or someone similar.

This had me laughing so hard I almost cried. I was raised Catholic but never baptized or confirmed in the church. My father was an atheist and didn't believe in Busy Girl should present that to the priest and see what he has to say about it, I'm sure he will persuade her to find something "more appropriate".

I LOVE Shaniqua! When I was confirmed, I wanted "Christina". My parents insisted that I had a middle name, it was "Ann", and it would stay that way. I was forced to choose the redundant "Ann" as my confirmation name. In retaliation, I signed my name "XXXXX Ann Ann XXXXXX" on any document, homework assignment, and thank you note for years to come.

My confirmation name is Blessed Kateri Techawitha. Chosen solely for the reason that the priest couldn't pronounce it.

It is absolutely amazing how many misconceptions there are about Catholicism. The thing that irks me is people's absolute refusal to be wrong about someone else's religion (or culture, or country of origin). It is just astounding.
