Gift ideas

I need your help.

What is a good host/hostess gift for Busy Dad to take to England when he goes?

I'd like it to be something representative of home and and easy to transport.

If you're from my town, give me some ideas that are unique to here.

Thanks!

Moon Pies and RC Cola? Little Debbies? Whiskey?

Maggie just listed a bunch of really original house warming/host presents at mightygoods.com.

Some of them were really neat!

Goo-Goo clusters
Christie Cookies
Tennessee Tipsy Cake

a country singer?

Personally I love the Got Biscuits? t-shirts from The Loveless. But seriously, have you scoped out their gift shop? In that same good ole Southern cooking genre, what about something from Cracker Barrel? (I know, I know...but it's Southern.)

Any sports fans who would appreciate something with the Titans logo on it? Ball caps would transport well.

I have German friends who have more than they could possibly need or want and I've brought them Goo Goos, Titans merch, etc., etc., but they absolutely flipped over a mason jar of Tennessee moonshine. I know, not helpful. But true.

An air brushed t-shirt from Pigeon Forge?

I don't know exactly who you are buying for but the above suggestions sound good. I would add t-shirts or sweatshirts with state names, or other logos from your area (Hubby would have room to bring stuff back!) Is there a local photographer that you love that you could send great matted pics of your area?

Hope he has fun!

My husband is British, I will ask him in the morning and send you a note.

Tennessee T-cakes.
They rock!

Pay no attention to the frosting they put on them for the picture - absolutely unnecessary!

My sister, living in London, suggests maple syrup. (Other things she buys when she's here to take back with her are: Nestle's chocolate chips, Hershey's choc syrup, Kraft mac & cheese, Wishbone Italian dressing, Saltines, and Oreos. These are all available there but very expensive. Depends on what you liked growing up. They would be more appropriate if your friends are Americans living in England. If they're British, then the maple syrup.)

I'm not from your area but... one thing our friend in Scotland LOVES are calenders of our area. Of course, not the easiest thing to get now, but things like that are always appropriate.

Oh, and Twinkies.

I was going to say Goo Goos and Tipsy Cakes too. I don't know what it's like in England, but one of our waitresses in Austria said they can't get peanut butter and that she loooooved Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and had anybody she knew going to the states bring her back some.

Not knowing how extravagant you may want your gifts to get, and how many you'll need, may I suggest one of those state photography books - you can personalize the covers...

Here - by the magic of Google I give you

Anything with the Jack Daniel logo - Tipsy Cakes, Lynchburg Whiskey Cakes, any of those products make great gifts.

I like the Goo Goo cluster idea but also anything with Elvis on it I am sure they would love. I know you are not in Memphis but he was from Tennessee.

We visited in Portugal and they wanted chocolate chips and grits. I brought heath bits also so they could make heath bar cookies.

Like the others, I recommend local foodstuffs. Here in California, there's a company that makes outstanding chocolates called See's -- and that's what I usually bring.

Conversely, the stuff I bring back usually consists of various Cadbury's goodies that are unavailable here. Cheapest souvenirs you can find and the most appreciated, too.

We take packets of kool-aid and countrytime lemonade. Tootsie rolls are also good. We also take hats (farming community) and I have done refrigerator magnets with scenery from our area. Local books and magazines are good too. Trinkets with the name of local businesses.

Tipsy Cakes!!! I'm so glad to see all the mentions of them - my mother-in-law created them and owns that company. They are yummy!

Those soft peppermint sticks. Something from John Deere or Nascar. Cornbread mix. Maybe beans, too, with a recipe. CDs. I think the Elvis, Jack Daniels and Titans suggestions are good. Also, local university merchandise. If you're looking for extra kitsch maybe something guitar shaped (a flyswatter comes to mind...)

We usually take a deflated football or basketball with a hand pump. Its is easy to pack and won't get you in trouble with security.

This may be cheesy, but Wal-Marts usually have a local section with souvenirs . Maybe you could check that out. It may be cheap.

He should have something from the Vandy bookstore.....like a shirt or gym shorts.

Goo Goos

Duh

(Bring me some, too! Goo Goo supreme please)

BTW - Reese's Cups and Oreos and even Hershey's Bars are now becoming much more widely available now. My corner store has Reese's Cups now. But nobody sells Goo Goos.

I hope this isn't too late. . . What about some jelly from the Loveless Cafe? Sure would be good on some scones or something. . .

Jack Daniels and Goo Goos. My (english) inlaws loved them when I came over the first time.
