I was talking with Donna about her Wii (heh, I said "her Wii") when I mentioned that I really, really want one.
I'm a teenager of the early 80's before "game room" meant the room in your house dedicated to your PlayStation, your Wii or whatever.
If we wanted to play a game, we had to drive to an actual game room, a storefront with video game machines and quarter dispensers, and boy did I spend me some quarters in my day.
To this day, I'd love to have my own Tapper machine.
The Budweiser version, that is.
Yes, I know I can play it online, but it's not the same.
Must I have a point, here?
Anyway, for someone who loves video games as much as I do, my kids are woefully lacking in game systems.
We have a couple of Gameboy SPs in the house and a PSP, and a Game Cube that works on occasion.
We need to remedy that, but our TV is so old any new game system would be worth more than the TV. Maybe this Christmas...
However, since I never actually grew up, as an adult I got a Nintendo for Christmas one year.
"'Nintendo' what?" You young whippersnappers might be asking.
Just a Nintendo.
A Nintendo is all it's 2 wired controllers, Mario and Tetris glory.
Actually, I think it was an NES, but no one ever called it that.
I loved that thing.
Actually, know what?
It still works.
I put it together for my kids when they bitched about not having a Wii and I told them it was cool because it was "old skool".
I think it might have worked:
Busy Boy is hunting him some ducks.

Yay for the NES love!!
I never had one. I only had an SNES.
Wii's are awesome. But nothing will ever beat that SNES of mine.
Which still works, as well. =D
I had the same Nintendo. Boy things have come a long way since then.
FYI: I got this from Slackermama a few months back, but go to www.wiialerts.com and you can be alerted when someone gets some Wii's in stock. You can also state what price you would like to pay (within reason of course). Worth checking out.
I got one of those Atari consoles a few years back. It has all of the really, really old skool games. Ya know, like Pong? Anyway, I thought my boys would dig it and at $30 it fit in the budget. Not so much. I play it more than anyone-I rock at Centipede, dude!
What is very cool about the Wii is that you download the old school games as well. I have been loving Super Mario World on it...
Yes I got one for Mr. D for Christmas. It is really mine, shhh.
$20.00/week (a conservative estimate of 80 quarters to the Hwy 70/100 Game Room and Bellevue Billiards) x 52 weeks x 5 years from age 12 to 17 x the CAGR of 9.87% of the S & P 500 from 1983-2007=
(brace yourself)
$54,756
I believe we could've afforded a Wii. Or a Porsche.
Holy @#$@ CeeElCee, what makes you SAY things like that???
Count me in as an early-80s video game afficionado. Or however the heck you spell that. Addict, I think. :)
I have delayed getting a video system b/c I figure the 8yo will be totally addicted to it, too. But I bought her a Nintendo DS for Christmas, and for the moment, she thinks it's cool that her mom is better than she is on Super Mario and Legend of Zelda. She likes it when I solve levels and/or find stuff for her to use later.
So, your real dilemma is TV/Wii or family vacation...yikes, not a choice I want to put to a vote here.
I never had a game system growing up, but post-college, a friend of mine had an old NES, and I spent countless hours at her apartment playing. My son got a GameCube a year or so ago, and I have spent plenty of time on it. When he got his Wii for Christmas, I downloaded some of the old NES Mario games and introduced him to them. He LOVES them (as do I) and it blows him away that you can't go back and re-play levels you've already finished, and that when you run out of lives, that's IT...game over. Love it. And Wii Sports is pretty damn awesome.
Haha, dude I miss my NES! Those were some good times :D
We bought my mom an NES when they came out (she's 74 now) and she mentioned the other day how much she loved playing it. Mario rules!
We have a Wii at our house. My son THINKS it's his. But it's really mine.
We bought my son a Wii for his birthday. Both my children are at their grandparents' house tonight and my husband is away in Prague on business. I am alone in the house tonight. Guess what I'll be doing! (I've got a table to build for the Mayor in My Sims!!!)
we have an old NES as well as a SNES, a N64 and a Wii.
And while I know that everyone swears that the Wii is so much better, I prefer playing Donkey Kong 64. I just can't get the hang of the Wii controllers and like buttons and a joystick!
Even though I still have my NES and N64, I thought we were the only family without a Wii. Perhaps, there's a pity party in there...somewhere.
We just hunted up our old itty-bitty Game-Boy and the girlies have been bonkers for Mario.
I also have Tetris and Pac-man. All I need now is Donkey Kong and we will be in game perfection mode.
I LOVED Tapper!!
I had kept my Atari 2600 for the longest time, until one of my nephews came over our house and had more Atari Games embedded in a cheap joystick game unit (it looked like the 2600 controller, but had the games on board and you just plugged it into the television) than I owned for my 2600. I sold it on eBay the next day.
Get the Wii. I love mine. The kids only play when I'm done, darn it.
It's the first video game I ever owned (I'm not a child of the 80's, I'm more 50's, and pretty close to 40's).
The bowling is cool, the cow racing is cool, and I've got a lovely customized Mii ready to mingle with my buddies.
AHHHHHH! The old Nintendo! I LOVED the old nintendo.
Personally...I think Duck Hunt was rigged...and I hated that stupid dog. He always laughed at me.
...perhaps thats why I harbor a secret hatred to the ducks who are in my backyard.
....
did I just say that out loud?
Oh eeeeek! Do you have Legend of Zelda? That was my fav!!
My boyfriend and I live together and right after my twenty-second birthday we had a big snow storm. This happened the weekend of my youngest brother's ninth birthday, when I was supposed to travel home.
We ended up buying a wii because the gamestop had them in stock. I never had a Nintendo/NES or anything like that. My brothers have a game cube and now mine and the boy's old PS2. Now, me and the boy will spend upwards of an hour a day playing wii, especially playing Super Mario 3. Kudos to finding a NES that works well!
You started me thinking, I think we still have our old NES out in the garage. I think by boys would get a good laugh from it.
We never had Nintendo, but we had Atari. Oh, the hours spent on Frogger!
We love the Wii so much. Heck, we even got the 90 year old to play bowling (as long as no one's watching.) Nintendo has been a part of my family since 1988.
Anyway, if you don't know, you can use the other controller to control the ducks in Duck Hunt. Found that out when I was 5, much to my brother's dismay.
(If you'd like some tips on family/kid friendly Wii games once you get your hands on the elusive thing, hit me up. If you'll excuse me, I need to get in my daily Wii Boxing :))
I still have my NES too - I love me some Mario! We also have the N64 which I keep around for Yoshi. I love retro.
Wow, completely off topic of your post, but I wanted to introduce myself. I added you tonight on Twitter and to my Google Reader. I'm Mae from St. Louis, MO. SAHM to two babies two months apart and a four year old. I'm a mommy blogger, vlogger, and YouTube show producer. I found you via Becky Carey's Twitter page. Hmm what else? Oh! I love that you rhymed Easter with Keister. From next year onward, we will always have an Easter Keister egg in each basket. Not sure what it will look like, but you know it will be fun to decorate. Hello!
Ha, I like how you had to link to the Nintendo wiki. Come on now, it's not that old! I still play Super Nintendo (or "SNES" if you may) faithfully on a regular basis. Super Mario Brothers, hands down, THE best (and most addictive!) game EVER in the entire UNIVERSE! I don't care what comes out a billion years from now, nothing will ever compare to SMB!
BusyMom! Rootbeer tapper? Did you have somethng to do with this scandal?

I love our Wii although I'm happy to say nobody is addicted in my houes. The best thing we have for it are the sports games, the tennis, bowling, boxing and baseball and a lot of fun. Our kids jump all around playing and it makes me feel better about them playing a video game.
