Kentucky Derby heartbreakI didn't see the Kentucky Derby today, but I just saw the news about them having to put down second place winner Fifty Eight Belles, and it's just completely heart-breaking.

Not to speak at all ill of the dead, because lawd knows some tears were spent here in our household today, but her name was just Eight Belles. I'm guessing you probably read "Filly" as "fifty."
We were rooting hard for her and RUABelle and me are pretty crushed. I raised a julep in her honor. We're actually questioning whether we want to go to Steeplechase next weekend now. It sucks to be so empathetic sometimes.
We were thrilled when she came in second (and we hit the exacta), then devastated when we saw her collapsed on the track.
The Hubs and I happened to be watching the race and it just happened. It was so unexpected. Strange. We sat there shaking our heads. In such a moment of joy for one group, there was devastation for another. Surreal really.
Oh my God! I'm glad I didn't see that.
Isn't that just the most heartbreaking thing? So sad.
The problem with this type of thing now is that the horses are being bred to run too fast. I will applaud the day when these creatures will be spared the agony.
It was such a tragedy. And of course Peta is right there to try and take adavantage of it:
