Salad days

In another installment of "Wow, she's odd...", this is the one where I inform you that I'm not very good at making a salad.

I'm talking about plain ol' salads with lettuce or related greens and some vegetables, not necessarily the thousands of variations on the word "salad" out there.

Now, I understand that a salad isn't very hard, and it's not that I don't know how to make one, I'd just rather eat the ones you make.

Though I'm not fond of chopping vegetables, it's not the work involved that makes me dislike my salads, I'm not sure what it is.

Before you get nervous about eating at my house (shut up, Miss Ann), let me assure you there's nothing wrong with my salads and I'm sure they taste just fine, it's just that I'm not fond of them.

Some people can make beautiful salads effortlessly, I'm just not one of them. Mine just never seem to look quite as appealing as yours.

Part of the problem is that I'm limited as to what I can put in them at home.

Busy Dad hates peppers, and the kids won't eat tomatoes or onions, thus eliminating a lot of the colorful options that make a salad look appealing.

So, I guess I'll just continue to throw some lettuce and carrots together and mourn my lack of salad makin' skillz and be a little jealous of yours.

I have no idea where I'm going with this, but I was hoping you'd have me over for a salad.

I'll have a Diet Coke from Sonic to drink, please.

I'm sure you already know the solution is to put the questionable food in separate dishes and let people add them individually. Bravo to any southern child with the courage to stand up in protest of the "put onions in everything" cooking that is so popular here.

Instead of making one big salad try composing everyone's salad on individual plates. You get all the pretty stuff that nobody else wants and they get lettuce with a huge handfull of cheese buried in Ranch dressing. At least that's the way it works at my house.

I had a co-worker that would bring the most beautiful salads to work. Lettuce and tomatoes, bits of onion (not a lot), chopped up egg and more stuff I can't remember. I know that it isn't hard to make salads like she did, but I just can't seem to do it.

I'm evil - I just make them pick out the stuff they don't like.

Wow, looks like you got an invitation to a porn site, you lucky thing.

I make a great salad. It comes in a BAG.

I love salads, but I'm not crazy about making them either.

You're doing it wrong! Don't make a big bowl of salad, set up a salad bar!

I'll share my "trick" with you. It's not really a trick, but it works for me. I make individual salads. We're talkin' basic salad here. I put it together in layers. Lettuce first, onions [I leave that off kid salads and thats really the only slack I cut them], then a few shreads of julienned carrots, shredded purple cabbage, several slices of cucumber and top with cherry tomatoes. Sometimes I add turkey/ham/cheese/whatever, but not always. Kids start with salad first so they have a long time to pick at it and hopefully eat some and if they don't like something I've put in, they can easily pick it off because it isn't all mixed in. Eat it or pick it off are the options.

I also put a bowl of croutons and bottled salad dressings out for everyone to pick from. I like different dressings, but hubby and kids will only eat Ranch or Thousand Island. =/

Salad, hummm, I mean to put out a bag but I always forget then it gets all mushy. So you are one up on me.

I buy the prewashed lettuce in a bag or in bulk at the grocery store (is easy and saves time). Then I chop/slice some veggies and leave them out on the cutting board for the kids and my spouse to pick from and add to their lettuce. I might sneak the leftover veggies into a casserole at another meal.

I used to suck at making salads too, but then I started chopping up raw broccoli and cauliflower and now my salads rock. Seriously. Best salads ever.

I HEAR YOU!!

I feel the same way about my salads... They definitely taste better when some one else makes them.

Maybe we should make each others lol

... or just stick to the cheese curds.

did you get enough advice yet? I'll add some more then... i make a salad almost every meal. lettuce (even the bagged type) carrots, croutons, cheese, nuts of some sort, maybe raisins or craisins, and dressing. good luck!

I always tend to put too much extra stuff in my salads and not enough lettuce. Then all the lettuce gets consumed and there's a handful of peppers, carrots, croutons, etc remaining in the bowl. I can just never get the ratios right!

I feel your pain. I LOVE salads and love making them, but my husband won't eat peppers or celery and the kids won't eat anything.

One way to really dress up a salad is to buy frozen cheese torellini, cook it (obviously), run it under cold water and add it to the salad. It's really good with raspberry vinagarette dressing, and it can turn the salad into a meal. Sometimes I even add chicken & roma tomatoes. Fancy! :)
