I feel like I may have written about this before, but I can't remember.
You know what chaps my hide?
When people comment negatively on food while you're eating it.
It doesn't gross me out or anything, I just think it's very rude.
My kids aren't allowed to say things, ("Eewww!" in particular) as someone is eating, but apparently that's just my hangup.
I was fixing my oatmeal at work and somebody walked up behind me and said, "Eewww, I don't like oatmeal, it just gets all up in my mouth and stuff."
While I am completely unclear where else oatmeal on a spoon goes besides your mouth and I have no idea what "and stuff" referred to, I just thought that was incredibly rude, and not a visual I wanted.
Now, had I said, "Hey there, what do you think about my oatmeal?" then it would have been totally different.
But, I didn't.
It's not the same thing as saying you can't stand some food (I'm looking at you, raisins in food and nutmeg) in conversation, I'm talking about making some negative exclamation at the moment of consumption.
Stop it.
That is all.

YES.
Wow! That is so rude! Where else could oatmeal go? Seriously! I also get really aggravated when people make remarks about my food. If you don't like it, then don't eat it!
I think this is pretty rude too. Especially if you are not asking anybody's opinion about what you eat. And besides there is nothing bad with oatmeal? Well, in fact they are healthy.
The person has no class, tact or taste. Trifecta!!
I am sooooo with you on this. Unsolicited food commentary is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. When someone says my food is gross, it feels like they're saying I'M a gross person for eating it. Same goes for checkout clerks who comment on the items in my basket. I say tomato, you say tomahto, I say potato, you say licorice tastes like a monkey's asshole. TO EACH HIS OWN, NOW SHUT UP AND HAND ME MY RECEIPT.
I HATE that too. I think it's rude and obnoxious! I feel like saying to those people "Who the hell asked you?". I tell my kids the same thing. It can make you feel self conscious, especially as a kid. Great post!
Yes, I agree! The kinds of people who make those kinds of comments are often also the kind that don't like a lot of foods - keep it to yourself!
I found your blog through the Spatulatta links page. My kids are similar ages (two boys, 12 and 15). You've got a great sense of humor! I especially enjoyed the Chuck Norris facts - very funny.

That's annoying. I've had similar instances when I order fish at a restaurant at and the person I'm with makes some rude comments about how they hate the smell.
Totally!! I know I work on how my kids talk when people are eating too, and I used to hate at work when people commented on your food while you ate it. So rude!
Yes. That. Exactly.
I completely agree with you on this, my kids know that is one of my biggest pet peeves because it's so rude and they know better than to ever do it in front of me or to me.. I agree with Blabbermouse too, when someone says my food is gross they might as well say I'm gross. And it's usually someone who's opinion I'm not interested in anyway! I am always surprised by how many people don't even realize how rude they are when they do that.
No comment is definitely better than a bad comment on food issues! Yuck!
Extremely rude and thoughtless. By the by, I love oatmeal. It's wonderful. Busy Rude Coworker is not only tactless but doesn't appreciate good food.
I have a real problem with the food that some people eat in my office. When they heat it, the whole kitchen stinks of the smell for a good 1/2 hour or so.
Know what I do? I don't eat there, during that 1/2 hour. Done, no problem, and I don't see the need to try an inflict my opinion on their food as I wouldn't want it done to me.
Some people just can't think outside their own narcissistic values though and seemingly confuse their opinion with fact.
Generally we are too negative. If you can't say something nice just try avoid saying something negative. There is good in almost everything.
My kids always have negative comments about dinner. I wrote this post about the most recent dinner episode: http://www.mochadad.com/2009/06/this-chicken-tastes-terrible
Hee hee...I couldn't agree more! My son did this to me recently while eating a bowl of creamed corn. He said, "Wow Mom...that looks like someone threw up!"
Needless to say - I put the spoon down :)
I'm just glad someone else doesn't like raisins in food and nutmeg.
That's where you smile, get right in their face, take a big ole bite of the offending food and say dramatically, "Mmmmmmmmmmmm!" while rolling your eyes in ecstasy.
Thought it was just me! I hate it when people criticize food I'm eating. What's the point? Obviously I like it or I wouldn't be eating it, and I'm not asking them to eat it. So it seems just gratuitous rudeness, like walking up to somebody and telling them their clothes are ugly or you hate their haircut.
And like Blabbermouse says, it's as bad when checkout clerks comment on what I'm buying. I always think, you're getting paid because people like me are buying this.
And then there's the more polite, but silly question, "Is that good?" Uh, no, I'm buying/eating it because it's really awful.
Of course, this might not be the right time to mention that oatmeal with raisins and nutmeg is one of my favorites, LOL!
Yes! It's one of my biggest pet peeves. Trying to teach my kids - and my husband :) - not to ever do that.
