I have the D50 and I'm pretty happy with it.
Apparently you missed the ipod/camera dust up over at my place. I was counseled away from the D40 based on it's Cnet review and ended up personally choosing the Canon digital rebel xt (Not the xti) based on it's reviews & input from some users. I can't tell you how well it works or how happy I am with it but I can tell you it is cheapest at amazon (by $100+ dollars for me) and is arriving today.
I just got my firsat SLR and was reccomended the pentax K100. It uses AA batteries, is easy to use, and great in lots of different settings. Oh and it also has shake reduction. I got mine from beach camera in Jersey ( on the web, it was the cheapest place).
I have had it for about 2 months now and love it.
If you buy off the web, make sure you get a US warranty with it. My hubster works at a camera store and they see people every day who bought something off the Internets and can't get service.There was a reason the price was so low.
I thought digital could NEVER take me away from my trusty Nikon 35mm film. Then my dear husband got me a Canon rebel digital....had the Nikon come out sooner I probably would have gone that route, seeing as I have a secret love affair with all things Nikon, but the Rebel is AWESOME. And not so pricey as they were a couple years ago...I am sure whichever way you go..you'll love it.
PS...flash card speed is a BIG factor in sports pics. I learned that the dumb way.

I love our Canon Rebel. It keeps up with our preschoolers and you know how fast they move!
I need both of these items as well.... battery for daughter, camera for me... I am leaning towards the Canon Rebel XTi ... you can get it at costco for 799. I am still saving for it :)
I know bupkis about cameras, I have a decent one the my husband bought. I will say this..I love the fact that it takes AA batteries instead of some battery pack that has to be recharged.
It tells me I am shaking unless the flash is up, guessing that is something with shutter speed....

Re: the laptop battery- what brand? Have you checked their website?
Camera- I use a Canon 10D, I have two lenses for it, one is a 50mm fixed, and the other is a zoom lens. I LOVE it so much. I had a Canon A95 point and shoot that I thought was adequate until I started using the 10D, what a difference.
I saw an advertisement for that camera and I so WANTED it! Then I saw the price...$800? Considering the damage I have done to the cell phones I have had over the past year (yes, one year) I know I would break the camera in a week. I cannot justify spending $800 on a camera I know I will mess up beyond repair :-) Love the camera though.
I have a D40 and love it. I know an itty bitty bit about photography too and it's perfect for me. it's a nice size, not too heavy. I rarely take it off Auto and my shots look pretty good. If you have any other specific questions, feel free to email me.
I have the D40 and love it. It takes wonderful photos. I have taken photos at my son's baseball games and the shutter speed is great. Never miss a shot. I would suggest upgrading the memory card. The one that comes with the camera is not that great and you would probably wat one that would hold a good amount of photos. Good luck!
The D40 is a full Digital SLR, not a "superzoom" point and click (if that is what you are asking). Other than that, I tend to stick to the superzooms, as I do not want to get started with buying lenses, etc. (And I know I would if I had one).

I sold a whole bunch of stuff on Ebay just to be able to get one one of these. I absolutely love it. It's got an "automatic" mode that makes it like an extremely advance point-and-shoot, plus all the manual controls when you're (I'm) ready to take that step.
I've VERY happy with this camera (D40), but that could be because I don't know what I'm doing. Check out my flikr page to see some examples of good and bad photography with the D-40.
I want a d40 as well, and have been saving for one. I just keep spending my savings, darn it. I have been using a d50 that I love, but think the d40 is perfect for me and my photographer friends assure me it is the best fit for me.
Hubs bought me the D80 for Christmas. It's fabulous but I know next to nothing about digital photography so it's probably $ wasted.
We bought the 30D at Christmas time and LOVE it. It takes fantastic photos and is very easy to use. I am sure it does more than what we have figured out so far, but we haven't had time read the manual!
