Plan ahead. Packing is a 3 day event for me.
Day 1: Laundry - every single piece of it.
Day 2: Layout complete outfits & pack em up.
Day 3: Load em up, move em out, rawhide!
Seems like a lot, but keeping it organized keeps me sane on crazy travel days. Also, the kids pack 1 small backpack with their entertainment items. They pack it, they can carry it!

When I pack our bags, my boys get packed in a suitcase together. I pack all their clothes in outfits (pants, underwear, socks and shirt). Each item of the outfit gets folded up all together, and then I load them into the suitcase in the order they need to come out. This way, we're not rifling through stuff in the suitcase...everything is always right on top (starting with PJ's!) and already matched together!

Always pack light. You usually need a lot less that what you think you do. Anything you come up short, you can always grab there. Although I have rarely had to do it.

We never own the latest/greatest anything, so I'm not sure how new cars come equipped these days, but if you don't own a rolling media room, you can get close. We have a "power inverter" plugged into a DC outlet up front. At the other end, it comes out AC. Like magic! Then you can plug in a surge suppressor/plug strip thing under the front seat into the back, and the kids can keep their vital stuff charged, like phones, iPods, and laptops. It will even power an Xbox. But not all of those things at once. Don't forget the headphones and a headphone splitter for the driver's sanity.

My best tip for holiday (or anyday) travel) is to pack a thorough carry-on with everything you need the first day. I have had too many delayed bags (especially during the holidays) and have been without a change of clothes or a brush. Now I always pack what I'll need that day so that I can be without my suitcase if something happens.

Travel as light as possible. Do carry on if at all possible. If you must check use a small carry-on with a change of clothing, medication, pens, identification. A lot of time is spent just waiting. Take something to do. Paperbacks you don't mind leaving behind when you are finished are good. Puzzles. Small video games.

If you travel with kids, opt for accomodations with a washer and dryer. Then you can pack very light, wash clothes and rewear them. At the price of extra luggage on airlines now, it's worth washing instead of packing.

The best way to make holiday travel easier is to not do it. Visit your family at other times of the year (grandparent's birthday, graduation, family reunion) and stay home during the stressful time of the travel year. But, if you can't do that - plan ahead and refuse compromise. If you do not want to sleep on cousin Vinny's smelly couch for the holidays, get a hotel room of your own. Share with another family member so you can split the cost of a nicer hotel.

When traveling, it helps to bring an extension cord or power strip. We usually have to charge phones, camera batteries, laptops, etc and there are not always enough outlets available.

The only way to make holiday travel easier is not to expect to be perfectly on time and to not get upset by that. Bring snacks, reading material etc to pass the extra time.

Pack for all types of weather. You don't want to spend money buying sweatshirts when you have a hundred at home

We don't normally travel with our family dog, but we did a few years ago for Christmas. We won't do it again. The dog didn't like the long drive and threw up multiple times in both directions. It probably didn't help that she ate some spilled food while at dinner.

I start making a list days and days before I have to leave on my trip. That way, I will have time as the days go by, if I think of anything else I need, I can just add it to my list.

I find it easier to wear layerable clothes and have slip on shoes to go through airport security.
Have your 3oz or less bag in the front pocket of your bag that way it's easy to remove.
