One in four kids in the United States will not graduate high school.
Research proves that reading proficiently by the end of third grade is a significant milestone on the path to graduation. Third grade is a turning point at which children make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn.
This is important to me, I have a third grader.
As part of Target's Read With Me initiative, Target is helping more U.S. children reach this milestone through doubling it's current support of reading by setting a goal of $1 billion by 2015 donated to support education and helping children learn to read.
One of the best things you can do for your child's success is read to them every day. Join Target and pledge to commit to a regular reading schedule with a child; donating up to 2 million age-appropriate books to kids in need; and establishing a physical and virtual center of excellence for reading that will bring reading resources to children, parents and caring adults who need them.
Need to get started? Look for children's books and check out some fun reading activities.

I will read with the kids anytime they would like me too. I especially like to read before bedtime or on rainy/snowy days. Favorite childrens book is still One Fish Two Fish. Dr. Suess still rules.

My favorite time of the day is reading books to our 9-month old twins at bedtime. Mom, Dad, and the babies all snuggle together on the bed and Mom & Dad take turns reading some our favorites: Llama Llama Red Pajama, I Love You Through & Through, Guess How Much I Love You, and more. Even at this young age, the babies LOVE to look at books and reach out for the pages.

Hi BusyMom,
Well, I'm not a mom (wish I were!) but my favorite thing to do with my two nephews is read to/with them. My younger nephew loves anything Curious George, and my older nephew is into Roald Dahl - who was one of my favorite authors as a child. I also liked Amelia Bedilia!

With two grandbabies and three more on the way, we will be doing lots and lots of reading with the kids. I wonder if I could ever find my old favorite, "Pookie and the Swallows" ... loved that book as a child. (My mother, who had to read it over and over and over, likely does not share in that sentiment!)

I have a third grader and a fifth grader. We've always enjoyed reading together.
Reading is part of our bedtime routine. I used to read to them. Then we took turns reading to each other - a word here or there and then alternate pages. Now they read to themselves and I get a recap from them about what they read the night before. One morning over Christmas break, I awoke to find Harry Potter on my bedside table with a sticky note, "Finished. 2 A.M. It was good!"
Our family recently discovered and inhaled the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull. We take turns reading to the family on car trips to Grandma's house!

My favorite time to read with my son is bedtime, when he was younger... just after he got into his pjs and was quieting down. Reading books where you need to whisper were the best, because he would say, "Can you say that again, quieter?!?" with a little grin on his face.
Now he's a teen, we read together at night before going to bed. We have chosen not to have TV right now, mostly he chose. We read the Sunday comics together, we share talks about novels he's reading in school, poetry (like Poe) and his love of mythology.
Anyhow, would love to win the IPAD ;~D

As a child, I adored our copy of "Hop on Pop" because my grandfather would read it to me. It was my favorite thing to do when I visited my grandparents. It thrills me that my children love books! My oldest is just a few weeks away from his 9th birthday, and his love of reading knows no limits! He has devoured several series of books, but the Percy Jackson series is his favorite. I am amazed at his knowledge of Greek Mythology at such a young age. My two preschoolers love to crawl up in my lap and listen to me read their favorite books. I hope they continue to love books, just as I hope to always show them my love for reading. Thanks for hosting this contest!

I love to read to my kids when they are tucked in their beds ready to relax and sleep. I read books like Ramona by Beverly Cleary. They can just listen and not look at pictures. It creates visual that they come up with for the story on their own. I remember my fifth grade teacher reading to us and the movie it created in my imagination. I hope to do the same for them.

My fave growing up was a story called The Seven Sneezes. A kid on a farm sneezed and everyone got their body parts all mixed up!

Well....the book that is fondest in my heart is and always will be "Love You Forever".
As my eleven year old daughter Olivia lay in a coma, aware that her hearing would be one of the last things to go....I read her that book. It was the last book I ever read her in her life. She passed away a few hours later.
"As long as I'm living, my baby you'll be"....goes the story. And thus, the story will always be the most special one.

I think after 4 kids, and over 16 years of parenting, I have too many favorites. :-) We've loved the original Thomas the Tank Engine stories, Brown Bear, all the Sandra Boynton books, Ella Sarah Gets Dressed, the Tom & Pippo series, Pumpkin Soup, and My Penguin Osbert. One that really had an impact on us all was The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. :-) Our favorite place to read is snuggled up on the couch together.

Historically the kids and I always had an hour before bed all snuggled in to read as a family. As they have aged 15, 12, & 10 they are now) it has become less of a family ritual, but we still read together daily. I have also never shied from reading classic "adult" books to them and they all enjoy different mythologies. I am working on my Master's degree in Library Science so books have permeated their lives since the beginning. We have recently been reading the Galstanberry Girlz as a family and it is quite good so far. Also, I was recently turned on to wegivebooks.org which allows you to read books online and for each book you read one is donated to an organization of your choosing. We have been reading SkippyJon Jones books because they are so much fun to mimic the character voices!

As an English teacher, I know how important reading is, fundamentally. So whenever my four-year-old son wants to read a book, I leap at the chance. Though he cannot fall asleep without being read a book, and that may be his favorite time, my favorite time is whenever I see the eagerness in his eyes while asking me to read a book. He is really into Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter books, and I bet they would look really cool on this iPad! Thanks for a great giveaway and promoting the importance of reading!

We love to read everywhere and anywhere! We always read at night before bed, after breakfast when we have the time. I always have a book (or 5) in my bag for doctor appointments or waiting for the big kids to come out of school. When the weather is nice we love getting new books from the library, playing and then reading under a tree at the park. Some of our all time favorites are - Good Night Moon, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Velveteen Rabbit, Dr. Suess. As a family, we read aloud, the Little House series. We recently read Have You Filled a Bucket Today by Carol McCloud and loved it! My 5 & 6 year olds are still talking about that book (great story and lesson).

We love to read anytime, anywhere. I'm very happy to be raising a 6-year-old bookworm. Lately, we read in the living room in front of the wood stove. My son likes animal stories and fantasy. We're reading EB White and Dick King-Smith. Both excellent authors of children's books!

What a wonderful prize! It's so important to read to kids...it's a great way to spend time together too.
Our favorite reading time is at bedtime, when the kids get into my big king sized bed and we read together. My older son will even read a bit to the younger kids and our middle son, will try to read a bit too. It's a wonderful way to teach kids to love reading, plus it's fun too.
One of my favorite books that I really loved reading to my kids is "Rainbow Fish". They're now getting a little old for this book, but it's still one of my favorites.
Thanks so much for this wonderful giveaway!

I love curling up by the fire in the recliner with my daughter and reading her a story.
If it's a day when nothing needs to be done we can sit and read for several hours.

My son loves his new Captain Underpants books and he likes to read them before he falls asleep in his bed. My daughter likes for us to read her a few stories on and off during the day and at night she piles books onto her bed in her nightly ritual of reading them aloud (she's 3 and not quite reading!) until she falls asleep, books in hand, over her face, under her, all over the floor. My kids love books!

My favorite children's book right now is "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". My grandson was having a hard time with reading comprehension in school. Since he loved the movies so much, I bought the book for him, and read with him when I could, and discussed it with him on the phone when I couldn't be there. I won't take the credit,(great book, after all), but he seems to have developed a real love for reading over the last year.

I especially love reading at naptime and bedtime. We all climb into my bed and get cozy before we read. My son has started "reading" some of his favorites to us, which is particularly awesome. He's 3.5 and has a few books memorized almost verbatim, he could almost fool you into thinking he really knows how to read!
And my favorite book from my own childhood that is sadly out of print: "Need a House, Call Ms. Mouse!" I hope they re-print it.

The weekends are our favorite time to read together - since they are independent readers there is this lovely quiet time on the weekends when each of the kids and my hubby and me each have a book and the house is in a quiet lull in the family room as we are all engrossed in our individual books.
When they were younger, the Junie B Jones series and Harry Potter series were go-to books for us.

My favorite children's book is Horton Hatches the Egg. I loved this book as a child and I really love it now as a mom. I always get choked up when the egg hatches and an elephant-bird pops out and the text reads:
And it should be, it should be, it SHOULD be like that!
Because Horton was faithful! He sat and he sat!
He meant what he said
And he said what he meant...
And they sent him home
Happy,
One Hundred per cent!
Reading to my 3 year old is our favorite everyday, no-matter-what, activity. We read before naps and before bed time. I love how books often launch a myriad of questions including language, motive, and culture. If I could be a "professional children's book reader" I would do it in a heartbeat.

We snuggle up at night in the rocking chair and could read forever. During the day my daughter is just too curious and busy to sit and read, so it is our decompressing time where she actually sits still. The other favorite place to read is in the bathroom – she’s potty training so we spend lots of time in the bathroom and take advantage of the time to read. Man, I usually don't enter to win stuff but Laurel was just asking about an iPad. For real.
Anyway, even so she's not a total tech geek (shockingly). We have always spent a lot of time reading...it's one of our favorite cuddly time activities. And one of the great things is that she's now into chapter books that I loved as a girl and that still resonate now. So fun!
Right now she's really into the Little House on the Prairie books. We literally spent two hours on the couch the other day after school curled up reading Little House.

I really love to read to the kids right after dinner. We all gather in the living room and get cozy. Since the kids are all of different ages and book preferences, our time is spent reading bible stories. All 3 of the kids really enjoy it and so do I. I love watching their faces light up when they start recognizing one of the stories.

I'm also an early childhood special education teacher, and I love reading to my preschool students in our classroom reading center during circle time.

She goes to my uncle's (her dad) study and grabs a different book each time and give it to me to read. We both sit on the floor. She's too funny, while I read, she acts it out! For myself tho, I like Horton Hears a Who!

My favorite children's book is The Boxcar Children. It was my absolute favorite book as a child. I read it over and over again and was enthralled with the idea of four children trying to live all on their own in a boxcar. What a wonderful adventure! I now read that book every year to my "kids" who are my second graders. Our favorite place to read the story is over in our special reading corner. We have a cozy chair which belonged to my grandmother, a large blue rug and a reading lamp. We turn off the classroom lights and turn on our reading lamp and we are whisked off on a reading adventure on our "magic carpet". It is one of the best times of our day together!

WOW - my favorite???? My master's is in Young Adult Lit - I'm pretty sure I don't have just one favorite! My favorite book for the week in my preschool class, though, is The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco. LOVE that book. My favorite read-with-my-11-year-old book right now is Eragon (except the names confuse me!). And, with my 6 year old, I'm currently holding Llama, Llama, Mad At Mama on the favorite list.
Reading is SUCH an integral part of our lives. It is my hope to teach my children how it is a necessary joy in our lives so that they can share that love and joy with others.

I still read with my kids, and they're 13 and 11, only now instead of reading at bedtime, we go to the library and each of us picks a book. We find a quiet corner and I read the first two chapters of each book out loud. We vote and that's the book we take home. Then, in the summer we lay on floaties in the pool and I read to us, and when it's too cold for the pool we sit in the living room on the couch and read on the weekends. It's the little things.

We used to take our kids to the library and come home with loads of books, I would read one story every night with the kids beside me on the couch.

We are all fans of The Twenty-One Balloons. I loved it as a kid and all 3 of my boys do, too. The twins are older (12) and in school and so I try to have reading time with them individually. Warren snuggles up in the morning before the official alarm goes off. Dow reads in bed with me after his shower and before his bedtime. It's awesome to have time with them separately engaging in a favorite activity!

My favorite childrens book is and has always been since I was a child called "Mister Dog, The Dog Who Owned Himself," by Margaret Wise Brown. It's a lovely book with nice illustrations. When I visit with my granddaughters, we snuggle into bed before they must go to sleep, and I read it to them. It has become a favorite of theirs also!

Me and my children love reading "where the wild things are." It just never gets old or boring reading it. They get so excited when it's time for me to read the book. They're favorite place to listen to me read the book is in park when all you can hear is the wind and trees swaying it's a very mesmerizing and beautiful moment.

Anytime is the time for reading. You can use bill boards or street signs to help early readers with sight words. My husband, a schoolbus driver, keeps a basket of books on his bus for elementary kids on long rides.
